One can depend on Neo to provide a (not overly) challenging and enjoyable puzzle. A few uncommon words/meanings, but not ungettable, with confirmation from the referrences. Thanks Neo. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[Each picture at the bottom has an unidentified link to the puzzle.]]

I haven’t blogged an Eimi puzzle for a while, apart from the joint effort from him and Nimrod to mark the publication of the 8,000th Independent crossword, so I attacked this one with gusto.

For the past few months, I have been using this format which allows ready access to the actual clue, simply by holding the cursor over the clue number. Thank you, PeeDee for creating this feature which is very useful for the blogger (I even have my private version which includes the long list of my standard abbreviations) and the readers, whose request for the inclusion of the clues led to this.

A straightforward puzzle from Moley.
I look forward to your comments.

It’s one of those disorientating Mondays when we don’t have a Rufus crossword to start the week. Instead, we have a cleverly-crafted puzzle from Brendan, with mostly straightforward clues, which nevertheless produced several penny-dropping moments and a few smiles. [There are two or three clues in which I meed help, rather than delay the blog, which was fun to do, too.]

An Azed from the easy end of the spectrum, with almost entirely straightforward clueing, that I finished off in one shortish session. I don’t usually record these kinds of statistics, but I found I’d solved 14 clues after my first pass through, and 21 after the second, all without recourse to the dictionary. After that it was a fairly quick job to finish off the rest, despite an intial duff guess of DUCKE (C in DUKE) for 28ac. Read the rest of this entry »

There’s been a bit of discussion recently about the level of difficulty of the Indy Sunday puzzles now that we have a different setter each week. My experience with this one was that there were enough gettable clues to give you a foothold in the puzzle; but the last four or five took me almost as long as the rest of the crossword put together. My last in were the 25s, where the unhelpful crossing letters meant that there were lots of possible solutions.

We found this a relatively straightforward puzzle for a Saturday. Nevertheless it was very enjoyable, and it left us with a bit more time on a busy weekend to tackle the Inquisitor in the magazine.

I found this a pleasantly enjoyable solve, although over rather quickly for a Saturday.
I’ve seen much tougher clues from Araucaria but there are some nicely constructed ones here. Nothing too outrageous but perhaps a couple of liberties in 1 and 17,18dn. It left me with a smile on my face, anyway.

Hopefully I’ve got the right puzzle this time. Let’s check… 1027. Yes. Good.
Many apologies for posting the wrong one earlier.
Shark’s ‘Checkmate’ has extra letters and highlighting galore, which I’d like. I’d also like it if ‘Checkmate’ was a reference to the Wu-Tang Clan (warning: link contains rap music), but I doubt it will be. (It’s not.)

Yet another new setter in the Indy apparently. When I saw that it wasn’t the usual Phi, who is no doubt going to appear tomorrow, I had slight fears that it might be far harder, but this wasn’t the case. Koroi has had a very satisfactory debut: Several quite straightforward clues, but a few that stretch one a little. Neither too easy nor too difficult, and generally so far as I can see a good standard of clueing. Lots of them, though: Koroi has worked hard here and I shall have to.
