The Don was saying in Another Place last week that if you wanted his most accessible puzzles, then the Monday Indy with his Quixote hat on was the place to come. And so it turned out this morning, with a precisely clued crossword incorporating a good variety of devices, and with a couple of less common words clearly signposted. A good one for improving solvers (and bloggers).

A fairly standard Rufus, though with (I think) a larger helping than usual of anagrams, especially the three long acrosses. These should give a good start to the puzzle for those who sometimes find it hard to get on the wavelength of Rufus’s double and cryptic definitions .

I didn’t have too many problems with most of this, but had difficulty working out the wordplay in 4d, for which I had written STRIPED without really thinking about it. A few LOL clues (and I don’t mean ‘lots of love’), with 6d possibly my favourite. Read the rest of this entry »

This was one of those rare occasions where I get to feel smug for finishing an entire Beelzebub without recourse to reference materials or other aids, so it must have been towards the more tractable end of the Beelzebub spectrum. Not that this was overly easy: I recall a satisfying solve over a couple of sessions, and just having to check 10ac and 23dn in Chambers before being confident enough to blog them.

I seem to recall that it took me some time to get into this, but did finally complete the answers and parsing. (Is it my imagination or are the IoS puzzles gradually getting harder? – but no complaints.) Thanks Hypnos. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The picture at the bottom has an unidentified link to the puzzle.]]

Apologies for the late post on this puzzle – as a result, I won’t waste time in saying much beyond that this was a lovely prize puzzle from Paul with lots of enjoyable clues.

I must admit that this looked like being a somewhat embarassing “I don’t have a clue what’s going on here” blog post pretty much right up until the last clue was solved. Thankfully, everything fell into place in the end.

A short preamble, this week - across clues have an extra letter in their wordplay to spell out an instruction related to an unclued light. Sounds entry level, but is it?

We always look forward to our blog on a Friday. Phi never seems to disappoint and even when we have finished the puzzle we start looking for hidden themes or ninas. We’ve missed a few in the past but it didn’t take too long to spot this one although we didn’t start looking until we started the blog.

I found this fairly tough, and there are still three places where the answer is clear, but I cannot fully explain the clue. Doubtless help will be coming shortly.

The honour of blogging a Nimrod puzzle had not fallen to me for a long time, so I approached the task this morning with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

Nothing too challenging from Merlin today. A few more ‘hidden’ solutions than I’d like, and perhaps one or two somewhat stretched definitions, but also some lovely surfaces. I enjoyed it.
