Another enjoyable Sunday morning outing with Everyman. There are some lovely surface readings here, particularly in the clues for STARLING and CHATTY.

Thank you, Lorraine and Everyman! I, too, found this an enjoyable puzzle with nothing too difficult. Last to go in for me was 11 Down. I knew that I probably would not be familiar with the Essex town (we have an Essex County here in New Jersey, but I felt pretty certain the clue was not referring to our Essex!) so I waited until I had all the help from crossing letters, and then it was easy to get from the straight definition, plus I’ve learned the name of yet another English town! I’d never heard of a “Dutch auction” at 18 Across, but again figured out the answer from the crossing letters. I especially enjoyed clues 1 Across and 20 Down. Well, ‘secret’ can mean ‘hidden’ and ‘inner’ can mean ‘further-in’ which also could mean ‘hidden’.

Think of groups of dodgy politicians – the ‘inner-circle’ of these decide things secretly.

In 27, shouldn’t ‘orders brought back’ suggest REMITs, rather than REMIT?
