Entertaining stuff from Samuel. I do enjoy crosswords that give a laugh or a grin (or even a wry smile) and this gave quite a few!

I usually find Independent puzzles on a Tuesday to be slightly different from Monday and Wednesday fare. This was no exception.

A nice solve, with only one clue that, though I think I’ve got answer, I’m not sure about half of the clue – and I could be wrong with my answer too. The rest were enjoyable, with a favourite that had a smooth surface and a misdirection. Thank you Armonie. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom of the blog have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

I find solving and blogging this weekday puzzle quite an ordeal, probably because the mini-theme did not find a resonance in me and also because there are far too many unfamiliar words and phrases in one puzzle for my liking. However, given these constraints, I must say Tramp has been quite fair and creative in his clueing and I did chuckle at places, although few and far in between. Read the rest of this entry »

Enjoyable puzzle in the style one associates with Quixote. Trickiest part was SW quadrant and also 19D which was a new word to me but a very accessible puzzle overall. Solving time, 17 mins.

A very straightforward puzzle from Moley, with no high or low points. Read the rest of this entry »

A very quick solve, even by Rufus standards, with the usual generous helping of double and cryptic definitions. Not much more to say really, apart from thanks to Flashling for standing in for me last week while I was on holiday.

With apologies to anyone who struggled, I thought this was a remarkably straightforward puzzles — a quick solve on a train. I don’t have much to say about it — entertaining and clever as usual, but not quite vintage Cyclops. I think 11a is probably my favourite clue.

A slightly rushed post as I’m fairly late with this. One that I’m not sure about at 1dn.

As usual an efficient production from Azed. I don’t seem to have said much about a succession of clues where the words in both the clue and the answer are not, to say the least, everyday, but it seems pointless for me to copy out Chambers time and again. One imagines the solver will be armed both with the original and with a copy of Chambers. Read the rest of this entry »

Now that another Guardian crossword week is over (ending with a Puck-to-treasure, surely more about that in a week’s time) I thought: there’s still that last Monday’s gap waiting to be filled. In order to keep a 100% archive, I decided to write a belated blog – a simple one too. Moreover, I am in a Rufus/Dante mood anyway after just finishing the blog of that same day’s Dante puzzle.

A fun prize puzzle from Araucaria – we found this pretty easy apart from the the bottom right corner, which took another look a few days later to finish it off. There’s a mini-theme based around 9 across (FORGE), but no other special features I could spot.
