I really enjoyed this puzzle in much the same way as I do many of the Guardian Genius crosswords.

Knowing that the same letter is omitted, 1,2 or 3 times helps, as does looking for a sensible, possible quotation which will give hints to the missing letters. With the fact that I was familiar with many more words than usual; I actually found it easier than most AZEDs.

[Now ... can I do sums? ]

Where does he start? Presumably by finding a quotation with the right number of letters.
And then to be “vaguely appropriate”; what nonsense, for this solver it was totally apposite, I had to ‘turn mine eyes and pause’ on several occasions.
It was a real struggle on Sunday but by Monday I had enough to suss out ‘letters’ and then ODQ enabled me to finish it off relatively quickly.
Last in was 2d and favourite was 3d
This puzzle reinforced my opinion, often ststed, that a puzzle should be judged as an entity and not as a series of quibbles over individual clues.
