NMSIndy has given up his blogging spot to concentrate on his other existence as Raich (and Gurney) however he appears re-bjorn today as Raich for the Monday slot. NMSIndy was one of the longest lasting fifteen squared bloggers and his blogs will be much missed.

A straightforward enjoyable puzzle, just nice for a Monday. Thanks to Pan. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzze. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets.]]

A reasonably straightforward Azed this week, with no particular problems (except one!) and a very friendly grid (only 2 unches in an 11 letter word). The problem is 10 across, which refers to Moby-Dick, but in a way equally as obscure (to me, anyway) as that great novel can be. Suggestions please. Here’s a link to the pdf of the puzzle as printed. A typical Everyman, I think: a clear notch above beginner level.

Always a pleasure to solve and blog a Sunday Indy from Raich. He had me struggling for the last few today, though …

I’ve been looking forward for a long time to an Enigmatist puzzle, especially in the Prize slot – but I’m not sure I would have chosen to open my paper to find one on my blogging day, as I was preparing to leave for the latest Sloggers and Betters Derby meet. I like to solve and blog a puzzle, as far as possible, all in one go and, as I think many of you will agree, one can’t bank on even solving an Enigmatist puzzle at one sitting, so I didn’t even look at it before leaving home and, as my train journey was only twenty minutes, it wasn’t worth taking it with me.

It took me a while to get through the layers (strata?) of this puzzle, not helped by a school-boy error on 6D and a couple of holes in my 1970s TV-watching CV…

Not the usual Friday Phi today (no doubt he appears tomorrow), and rather a difficult crossword from Poins instead. Not everyone is happy with the device of requiring the solver to get certain clues before being able to solve all of them, but in this case the three words required were fairly easy to find. I was still very slow to get some of the clues since the cast list seemed to bear no relationship to the answers. Oh yes it did.

Enigmatist, Nimrod, Io, Elgar and I (so two of us) will be in Birmingham for a Steve Harley concert on the evening of Saturday 24 November, and we’ll be around all day (arriving Friday evening). If anyone living locally would like to meet up during the day to solve puzzles over a pint or two, that would be great.

Having done the Private Eye crossword for many years, I am familiar with Brummie’s distinctive style, and attuned to some of his deviousness.

A puzzle with wonderfully crafted clues – I think everyone of them has a clever, meaningful, and often, racy surface, and with lots of wordplay intertwined with the definitions - too many for me to highlight below. There were by no means any write-ins (for me, at least), but that also meant opportunities galore to savour the clues. Thanks Arachne. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[Between them, the pictures at the bottom share 2 unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments about them in double brackets.]]

Thanks Morph for another enjoyable puzzle. Some of the clues left us very puzzled but when the penny dropped we could see that the clues were fair (but very often mischievous!).
