Hi, John. I have been a little surprised when Cinephile had used the name of some very contemporary artist but, yes, many if not most such references are to old-timers like these two. But I know from this blog that there are some relative youngsters who manage to solve these puzzles.

When I did this I couldn’t see the cluing of ANIMAL. Now I am certain that these crosswords are only for us oldies. My kids would never have heard of either Paul Robeson or Lana Turner. I’m glad they are though, because I am not familiar with modern actors and singers.

Don’t recall too many hold ups but I couldn’t explain 28a or 13d.
