Guardian 25,822 – Bonxie

Posted by Uncle Yap on 18th December 2012

Uncle Yap.

Thank you, Phil Ashling for filling in so admirably for me last Tuesday when I was among 1,500 having a celebration lunch in a remote village in Fujian, China. We, all surnamed Yap, had come from many parts of the world for the consecration of a Taoist temple set on top of a hill. The Chinese are very big into ancestor worship and filial piety.

Guardian Quiptic 683 / Pan

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 17th December 2012

Bertandjoyce.

This was a delightful way to start the week.

We don’t think we have done a Pan puzzle before but we will keep an eye out from now on. The surface reading of many off the clues was excellent! Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian 25,821 / Rufus

Posted by Eileen on 17th December 2012

Eileen.

A fairly typical Rufus mix of anagrams and double and cryptic definitions, with the usual silky-smooth surfaces, mostly straightforward, which is no bad thing at this busy time, with a couple of [for me] less familiar words. Thank you, Rufus.

Independent 8167/Punk

Posted by Pierre on 17th December 2012

Pierre.

Punk on the oche again for the Monday offering.  I did enjoy this one: some folk might think the setter’s taken one or two liberties, but I like the fact that there is a variety of styles among the Indy compilers.  Generally an accessible puzzle, I thought, as is normal for the Monday slot; but if my reasoning is right we might have to have a stewards’ enquiry about one of the clues.  Most importantly, however, it made me smile in a few places, which is my main criterion for judging whether a crossword is pleasing or not.  There are some interesting words and derivations, so as usual I have wittered on a bit.

Seasonal Felicitations

Posted by Gaufrid on 17th December 2012

Gaufrid.

It’s the festive season again (it doesn’t seem that long since the last one!) and time for me to offer my thanks to many people.

Cyclops 484: Reading the Riot Act

Posted by jetdoc on 16th December 2012

jetdoc.

Only a week since the last blog, I know — but this one has a submission deadline only three days after the publication date (though of course, many of us buy the Eye a couple of days before that). So I am getting the blog online to let you concentrate your energies on the Christmas puzzle, due later this week.

Independent on Sunday 1190/Poins

Posted by Pierre on 16th December 2012

Pierre.

Congratulations to whoever won the prize for this offering from Poins.  I thought this was one of the toughest IoS puzzles we’ve had in a while.  That could just be me having a bad hair day, but I thought there were some tricky parsings in this one.  And I think it’s the first crossword without a full anagram that I have ever come across.

Azed 2114/regression

Posted by ilancaron on 15th December 2012

ilancaron.

I solved this early in the week… but forgot to write up my notes until early this morning.  So I’m regressing to the mean: after a reasonably long spell of decoding all of Azed’s wordplays, a couple escape me this week.

Guardian Prize 25,814 / Paul

Posted by Eileen on 15th December 2012

Eileen.

A quick skim through the clues made me think I might not enjoy this theme much, because I didn’t expect to know some of the answers.  ‘North American food’ didn’t sound like my cup of tea!

Independent 8165 / Phi

Posted by John on 14th December 2012

John.

My apologies. I quite forgot that it was my day to blog and there I was blithely listening to the test match and suddenly remembering at 10.30. Then, to make things worse, a pop-up advertisement for the same company that I will not give unwarranted publicity to kept obscuring the puzzle as I was solving it, although I thought I had pop-ups disabled. How any firm thinks that it is in its own interests to interrupt people’s reading of some website wth a self-glorying shout I simply cannot see. I now have a solid opposition to any of this particular firm’s products.
