This year is the centenary of the crossword, the first one being published in the New York World on December 21st 1913. To mark this, John Halpern (aka Paul, Mudd, Dada, Punk) is organising a series of events around the country during the year, culminating in a Crossword Awards ceremony in December.
John is anticipating a number of awards including:
‘Crossword of the Year’
‘Clue of the Year’
‘Setter of the Year’
‘FT setter of the Year’
‘Guardian Setter of the Year’
‘Independent Setter of the Year’
He would greatly appreciate your input as part of the selection process and would like you to submit, at the end of each month, your ‘puzzle of the month’ and ‘clue of the month’ for each of the papers covered by Fifteensquared. I believe that those who also solve the Times and/or Telegraph will be able to vote for these on Times for the Times and Big Dave’s blog respectively.
I will publish a post at the end of each month to which you will be able to add a comment giving your selection. The preferred format will be:
Puzzle of the month: DATE, PUZZLE NUMBER, SETTER, LINK TO PUZZLE
Clue of the month: DATE, PUZZLE NUMBER, SETTER, CLUE NUMBER, CLUE
I hope as many of you as possible will cast your vote each month.
John has set up a website dedicated to the centenary on which there is some interesting reading. Please pay it a visit, particularly if you want to know if any of the events are taking place near you.
