Due to the limited response to the requests for nominations at the end of last month, John Halpern has decided that his time is better spent with other aspects of his Crossword Centenary activities. Consequently, no further nominations will be required.

Sorry this is a bit late, at any rate later than it would have been. The online crossword when I switched on around 9.00 was yesterday’s Tees, so I had to go out and buy a paper. I hope this isn’t to become the norm, for I see that the Indy has risen in price since I last bought it. (The right crossword’s there now, so I hope potential posters won’t be deterred.)

A welcome return to Schadenfreude – you kinda know what you’re getting.
The rubric is clear: ten answers, having something in common, are encrypted using a 26-letter phrase, the nth letter of which replaces the nth letter of the alphabet.

Tees has adopted a very topical theme for this enjoyable puzzle. It took us a little longer than we might have expected to tumble to the theme – probably due to our tendency to start with the across clues – but 6D fell into place fairly early on, and from there on it was fun fitting the various references into the grid. We particularly liked 1A/15D but our COD is probably 24A.

Quite a straightforward puzzle, so thanks to setter Gurney (a 15sq. blogger in addition). Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

A most pleasant romp this morning through some fairly challenging clues; some of which with definitions that are as mysterious as the cryptic part of the clues. Tramp has obviously taken great pain to ensure the definitions and the elements make for some very smooth surface reading. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. Read the rest of this entry »

A challenging puzzle for a Quiptic today in my opinion. Some remote synonyms, unusual definitions, and a surfeit of insertion type clues.

I suspect Quixote might have had a double dose of Weetabix for his breakfast before setting this one. I found it a good deal more difficult than his usual Monday puzzle.

A Rufus with, I thought, a more than usual share of anagrams, cds and dds, so it might win even fewer friends. There are some nice surfaces and misdirections, though. Thanks Rufus. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

I think there was some fairly tricky wordplay in this Cyclops — it took me a bit longer than usual. Was that just me, or do others agree? Read the rest of this entry »

A medium-paced Beelzebub this week, I thought. Not too hard and not too easy, but with plenty to enjoy.

This seems to be the first occasion on which I’ve blogged an Alchemi puzzle. I must admit I found it fairly challenging, requiring a few sittings thoughout the week. The explanation for 3dn still escapes me.
