A good and fairly tough puzzle this week. Plenty of insertions and less abbreviations than usual, I thought, which is not a complaint.

Lorraine: Good morning all. I know I say it every week but, I truly enjoyed solving this weeks puzzle
No real favourites just an all round clear and concise puzzle. I did need help to parse 16ac though.

As always a thoroughly satisfactory crossword from Azed. Quite apart from the quality of the clues, I am always impressed with his grids. More often than not, it seems, he has answers straddling the complete grid, sometimes several, and he seldom has many short words, although in this one he has the most un-Azed-like total of six with four letters or fewer. I thought this was about right for a Sunday puzzle. A few long charades to tease the mind, and an enjoyable solve on the whole. Thanks to Hypnos. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

After a worryingly poor showing in my first session on this one, things went much better in the second and I managed to work my way bit by bit though it, with the various extra hurdles adding both to the difficulty and to the enjoyment and satisfaction. Read the rest of this entry »
