Most Independent bloggers cycle through Friday, Thursday, Wednesday and Tuesday. Crosophile seems to be on a monthly cycle on the last Wednesday of the month. So if there are 4 weeks in the month, the Wednesday blogger will get Crosophile twice in successive months. That’s a long way tound of saying this is my second Crosophile puzzle in successive months, but I’m not complaining.

Mostly following the easy trend of the week so far, though a couple of place names may be unfamiliar to some, but as always with Orlando a quality puzzle with immaculate clueing and quiet wit.

A pleasant solve from Raich. As always one or two of the clues were very simple, which is no bad thing, but a few were a little tricky. I think I have it all explained but no doubt someone will put me right if not.

An enjoyable puzzle from Armonie, with some nice surfaces. Thanks to Armonie. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

I do hope new solvers will not get discouraged when a puzzle is described as “easy” which is a relative term. When I first started out doing cryptic crosswords as a student in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (talk of misspent youth
, I could not finish the daily puzzle until my third year and found every puzzle difficult. However, I persevered and here I am.

The scheduled blogger appears to have been unable to post today so here is a parsing of the clues. I cannot comment on the puzzle as I didn’t solve it but merely analysed the clues and published solution.

A rather rude awakening here from Donk in places, I found this rather tricky and can’t explain 17ac.
Seems ages since I last wrote a blog here, with Uncle Yap kindly taking over for me whilst I was indisposed.

My second outing with an Alechemi puzzle, but this was just as good as the first. I raced through this one pretty quickly, but that was largely due to the neat clueing which meant there was no doubt about the answers. I particularly enjoyed 1A and 21D.

A reasonably straightforward plain puzzle this week, but I do have a couple of quibbles about the cluing, and one where I may not have understood the wordplay at all, so suggestions are as always very welcome. Some relatively easy clues, especially towards the bottom of the grid. Thanks to Richard Heald for his corrections. Read the rest of this entry »

Another well-constructed crossword in the Everyman style with plenty of variety in the clueing. Just one new meaning of a word for me this morning.

A year or two ago I seemed to draw an Anax every time it was my turn to blog a Saturday Indy. Like female flatmates, it seemed that our cycles had synchronised. Strangely, though, it seems to have been some time since our last tangle, so I was up for the challenge.

As might be expected from a puzzle set by Enigmatist , this proved to be a challenge and although I did eventually manage to solve it on the day of publication, it took some days before I could completely explain all my answers. Some answers did require knowledge of sport or popular music, but I don’t think that’s unreasonable. There were some unfamiliar words (to me, anyway) and overall the standard of the clues was very high, with some excellent surfaces. Read the rest of this entry »

An intriguing preamble: As ‘instructed’ by the grid, solvers must make a choice in the case of eleven clashes; and a further ten clues omit a letter in the subsidiary indications – these letters, in normal reading order, ‘setting the scene’…
