Independent 8245 / Hob

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 19th March 2013

Bertandjoyce.

This is the second Hob crossword that we’ve blogged. There was quite a lot to enjoy here but a few of the clues left us a little disappointed after the recent wonderful debut Saturday Prize puzzle.

Guardian 25,899 – Brummie

Posted by Uncle Yap on 19th March 2013

Uncle Yap.

The puzzle today is rather straightforward except for the two clues which formed the centre-piece on the 60th anniversary of a great scientific discovery.

Guardian Quiptic 696/Nutmeg

Posted by Pierre on 18th March 2013

Pierre.

Nutmeg has produced a fair but toughish Quiptic for us this morning, I think.  A good variety of cluing this month, with one or two that I particularly enjoyed.

Independent 8244 by Quixote

Posted by NealH on 18th March 2013

NealH.

I found this Quixote one of the more difficult ones. There were plenty of easier starter clues but a number of more obscure words meant the bottom part of the puzzle was quite tricky to finish. There were lots of nice, well-constructed clues – 24 was a very neat &lit.

Cyclops 490: They eat horses, don’t they?

Posted by jetdoc on 18th March 2013

jetdoc.

Apologies for lateness.

Cyclops on good form this week, with some amusing and at times deceptively salacious wordplay, and several references to the discovery of horsemeat in many ‘beef’ products. I think 23/9/1 has to be my favourite, though. Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian Cryptic 25898 Rufus

Posted by scchua on 18th March 2013

scchua.

Another typical Rufus, with cds/dds taking the centre stage today.  Nicely compact clues, and overall easy but enjoyable.  Thanks to Rufus.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.  [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle.  Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets.  Thank you.]]

Beelzebub 1,201

Posted by Simon Harris on 17th March 2013

Simon Harris.

A very tough week. There was plenty to look up, both definitions and wordplay elements, much of which was only to be found in Chambers. The wordplay for 7ac eludes me, while 27ac and 28db have beaten me completely. The relevant clues have been reproduced.

Independent on Sunday 1,203 by Commoner

Posted by Simon Harris on 17th March 2013

Simon Harris.

I believe Commoner to be a new name to the IoS, and if that’s the case, then welcome! This was very much in the style to which we’ve become accustomed: a good Sunday crossword with nice surface readings and nothing especially troublesome.

Guardian Prize Puzzle 25891 by Shed

PeeDee.

A straightforward puzzle from Shed.

Like the last one of his I  blogged there is nothing wrong with the puzzle, but there is nothing special here either.  Is Shed getting a little tired of the crossword setting business? Read the rest of this entry »

‘Down Under’? Is it – finally – a ‘Neighbours’ themed EV? Will the clues include phrases such as ‘a bit of a barbie’ and ‘Ramsay Street’?

Independent 8237 (Sat 9-March 2013) Monk

Posted by beermagnet on 16th March 2013

beermagnet.

This puzzle had a enormous range of difficulty.

The short clues somehow stood out when I first glanced at the puzzle, and as they were eminently gettable double-defs, oddly enough the top right corner of the grid was tackled first.  A few other easy clues also fell quite quickly.
I really enjoyed the middle section of solving – a few more clues were solved with a decent fillip (oojamaflip indeed), others were teased out satisfactorily. At some point I had fully completed the right hand side, but soon after that came to a complete halt with six unanswered, hereafter known as the “hard last half dozen”.
