Independent 8308/Phi

Posted by John on 31st May 2013

John.

Phi continues to produce nice Friday crosswords. He is always a bit tricky to get started on, then once one is going it all falls into place fairly quickly. The sign of good clue-writing.

Enigmatic Variations 1070 Perimeter by Kruger

Posted by twencelas on 31st May 2013

twencelas.

Relatively straight forward in the preamble department – extra letters from the wordplay spell out a quotation and this will enable the solver to complete the un-clued perimeter cells. Sounds straight forward enough.

Guardian Cryptic 25961 Araucaria

Posted by scchua on 30th May 2013

scchua.

A clever puzzle from Araucaria.  24 down led me to the mini-theme but still a mental workout.  Thanks Araucaria.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

Financial Times no.14,326 by Loroso

Posted by Ringo on 30th May 2013

Ringo.

I struggled somewhat with today’s offering from Loroso, though in retrospect I’m not entirely sure why. A testing puzzle, for sure, with plenty of ingenious mechanisms and subtle misdirections, but nothing to grumble about, even though I’m rather in the mood for grumbling. So thank-you, Loroso.

Independent 8,306 / Alchemi

Posted by RatkojaRiku on 29th May 2013

RatkojaRiku.

It is the last Wednesday in the month today, so I was expecting to find a puzzle by Crosophile this morning. Instead, it is Alchemi who has provided today’s offering, so there has to be a reason for it – at the Indy, these scheduling anomalies always happen for a reason!

Inquisitor 1282: 5 DOWN by Kruger

Posted by Hihoba on 29th May 2013

Hihoba.

Wordplay in each of several clues yields a single extra letter which (omitting one keyword) spell out a phrase that was an integral part of 5 Down. The influence of this unclued entry has affected eight answers but, taking the phrase into account, another entry (which might otherwise be considered thematic) has been unaffected and must be highlighted.
