Just a bit of advance warning that Eileen and I have organised another Midlands Sloggers and Betters get-together for Saturday 17th May, starting at 1230, with lunch served around 1300.
As before, it will be at Waterfall, Derby, which is 30 seconds’ walk from Derby rail station. There’s parking right opposite for those coming by car, the food is okayish and we’ve got a big enough room to accommodate all who want to come. In the past, people have migrated later in the afternoon to the Brunswick Inn, a pub a couple of hundred metres away, where there is a fine selection of real ales for those interested in that sort of thing. John Henderson (Nimrod etc) has been known to bring a quiz to keep us entertained at the pub, but if you just want to try the beer or continue gossiping, that’s fine.
I’ll organise three hot buffet options, including vegetarian, and depending on numbers, it should be no more than £8 per head. Those who have attended before will know the form. For those that haven’t – and it would be lovely to see lots of new faces – it’s an extremely informal, welcoming event where friends old and new will chat about crosswords and many other things besides. There has been a healthy attendance from setters at the previous three gatherings (they like the fan-worship, to be honest, but if you’ve always wanted to say in person that their puzzles are rubbish, this could be your chance).
Since I’ll need to confirm numbers nearer the date so that the food can be organised, it would be helpful to let me know below if you definitely plan to come. You can also get in touch by e-mail at pwharvey {at} msn {dot} com.
It’s been a year and a half since our last Midlands gathering, so Eileen and I hope to see lots of you on the 17th.
Peter/Kathryn’s Dad
As on the previous three occasions, I disclaim any responsibility for helping to arrange this event, apart from saying, ‘OK, go ahead’. It’s all Peter’s hard work, so many thanks to him for organising it. [I’ll probably get roped in to help hand out name badges on the day.]
In the meantime, all I can do is urge you to come. Those who have been before will know how much fun it is and those who haven’t have a treat in store. Hoping to see lots of you!
Count me in – a good time shall undoubtedly be had by all.
I’ll be there, but only for the fan worship.
anax – guaranteed. x
I’ll be there for my first S&B event. Looking forward to it…
We’ll be there. @Anax, hmmm 🙂
Well, if I can’t worship my fans at an S&B, how else?
I’ll be there! Should be a good laugh (as always)!
And me, always good fun
I’m another first timer, but I should be able to attend.
Great stuff – count me in!
Unfortunately I can’t make this date. I’ll be in Manchester with my wife celebrating the end of my 30s. Have fun.
Neil
Dear Neil @12
And quite right, too, of course – just wish you could have been born on a different date! You know how much we’ll miss you!
Have fun, both! 🙂
I’ll be there (hard to believe it’s so long since the last one!)
I’m planning to be there.
I plan to be there. Thanks in advance for organising it.
Count us in too (or is that two in our case?).
I’m certainly hoping to be there.
I’ll be there with bells on.
Even I can’t spell my name these days… *sigh*
I’m even worse! 🙂
But I will be there too.
It’s good for me, train tickets booked already
Look forward to it!
I’m looking forward to coming – another first timer.
Thanks, everybody. Good to see that we’ll have some new faces – you’ll be welcome, I can assure you.
We’re up to over 30, but the private room we’ve got can accommodate plenty more, so if you do fancy a cruciverbal day out, let me know.
Peter
Ali & I will definitely be there. Look forward to meeting old and new friends.
I’ll be there – if I’m spared.
You will be very welcome, rhotician. Although I’d avoid discussing &lits …
In breaking news, we will also be welcoming an Indy/FT setter who lives in the States but is coming across to join us for the day. Never thought Derby was that interesting myself.
I will be attending.
Regards
Colin
Hi all!
Sorry I can’t be there. Very best wishes to you all for a great get-together.
Ray
We’ll miss you, tupu. 🙁
Yes, sorry to hear that, tupu. We’ll catch up another time, no doubt.
I’ll be there!
