Cambridge S & B – now confirmed: 25 April 2015

Posted by Sil van den Hoek on 14th December 2014

Sil van den Hoek.

We are delighted to announce that there will be a Sloggers & Betters meeting in Cambridge next spring. The date is Saturday 25 April 2015, the venue a nice pub:   The Castle Inn.

So far, 25+ cruciverbalists showed their interest with a clear “yes!”. If you changed your mind or if you want to add your name to the list of potential attendees, please be so kind to tell us here at Fifteensquared, now or at a later point (closer to the date).   Having said that, everyone’s welcome, at any stage, even at the last minute.

Details (how to get there, food, parking etc) will be given later.

Meanwhile, we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The world is a turbulent place, also one to be treasured.

Araucaria Anniversary – a message from Sandy Balfour

Posted by Admin on 26th November 2014

Admin.

It’s a year since John died. For some years his brother, Stephen, has set a cryptic quiz and donated the proceeds to various charities. This year, and partly in John’s memory, the chosen charity is Medicin sans Frontieres.

Solvers who would like to sample a different version of the Graham wit are invited to download the puzzle and make a small donation here.

Good News!

Posted by Admin on 19th November 2014

Admin.

Those of you who have been visiting this site for a while now will no doubt remember the appeal I made back in December 2012 for help towards the annual hosting costs when we moved over to a new, and has been proven better, hosting company. The response to this appeal far exceeded my expectations as I indicated in my subsequent ‘thank you’ announcement. To save me some typing I have copied/pasted the relevant two paragraphs below:

General Discussion & Site Feedback

Posted by Admin on 10th November 2014

Admin.

A software update this afternoon has caused an elderly WordPress plug-in to malfunction, resulting in an error which created display abnormalities. This plug-in generated the ‘paged comments’ in the above two posts. To avoid the error I have had to disable the plug-in so please accept my apologies for having to scroll down through several hundred comments in order to reach the more recent ones. I am looking into a way round this and will hopefully find a solution before too long.

Sloggers & Betters in Cambridge?

Posted by Admin on 5th November 2014

Admin.

It has been suggested that the next S&B get-together outside London be held in Cambridge, rather than Derby, sometime during March/April next year. Please indicate in a comment below if you might be interested in attending a gathering at this location.

Fifteensquared is now Twocubed

Posted by Admin on 1st November 2014

Admin.

Eight years ago today the first blog was published on Fifteensquared by the site’s founder neildubya (it was for a Janus puzzle in the Guardian which had appeared two days earlier). Since then we have posted blogs for many puzzles, in fact during the past week we passed the 10,000 mark. These posts have attracted in excess of 120,000 comments (not to mention over 3,000,000 spam comments, the vast majority of which have fortunately been intercepted by the excellent Akismet spam filter).

York S & B – cryptics

Posted by Sil van den Hoek on 29th October 2014

Sil van den Hoek.

Last Saturday’s marvellous York meeting was not just about beer, wine and cider. Or Wein Weib und Gesang as it was called centuries ago. The incomparable John Henderson gave us a lecture in pop quizzes, brilliantly done (and I mean that) but mostly lost on me, I fear. I didn’t have the courage to lift Polly’s hand to cheat on the answers that must have been correct since Jim T (otherwise known as Lato and Tyrus) was part of her team. And, of course, there were crosswords all around. If I am right, there were three non-newspaper puzzles available. A blog of John’s puzzle (this time as Elgar) can be found at Big Dave’s site, the other two are blogged below (and in Sundry Puzzles).

Cruciverbal get-together in Oz

Posted by Admin on 29th October 2014

Admin.

I have been asked to sound out opinion as to the feasibility of having a get-together of solvers in Australia, similar to the S&B gatherings that we have here in the UK, sometime during the next couple of months. If you might be interested in attending such a meeting please indicate this in a comment below, along with your preferred location for it (or your home location and the distance you are prepared to travel).

A message from John Henderson

Posted by Admin on 27th October 2014

Admin.

Jane and I would like to thank everyone for making the (first) Sloggers and Betters York weekend such an amazing event. We were 22 on the Friday pub quiz crawl and exactly sixty in number at the main event on Saturday in the Fox and Roman, whose staff excelled themselves in hospitality, organisation and (most importantly!) food and drink. We were sorry that Geoff (Gaufrid) and Chris (Samuel) were unable to make it to the event.

York S&B — itinerary

Here are maps of the pubs — a bit low-res for upload purposes, I’m afraid. I hope they’re legible. I can send a PDF if you email me directly; or maps will be available on Friday evening if necessary.

A sad loss

Posted by Gaufrid on 3rd October 2014

Gaufrid.

Some of you may have noticed that one of our regular contributors, rhotician, has not commented recently. Sadly, the reason for this is that he was in hospital where he passed away on Tuesday morning.

Since his first comment back in early June 2012, rhotician has regularly provided valuable input to our discussions and I, for one, will miss his contributions. I’m sure that all those who visit this site, particularly those who met Michael at one of the S&B get-togethers, will wish to join me in sending condolences to his family and friends.

Charity cryptic quiz

Posted by jetdoc on 3rd September 2014

Richard Cleaver has asked me to help publicise this cryptic quiz, which is raising funds for MIND. Do have a go — it’s pretty good, and in a very deserving cause.
