A number of you may have seen some articles last week in the press concerning our crossword research and, in particular, the recorded crossword solving trials we conducted in Buckingham during 2011, which some of you kindly volunteered to assist us in. I’m afraid that (the press being what it is) our research has been rather mangled, and I’d like to set out what the real position is.

A week ago I installed a WordPress plug-in to cache the site’s content. This was because the large number of unwanted bots that regularly crawl the site were causing problems by generating excessive demands on server resources.

Many thanks to Arachne and Gervase for organising such a friendly and enjoyable get-together in Manchester yesterday and for allowing me to gate-crash it for my research. Could I also thank the 16 volunteers who bravely took part in my word-game tests? I collected more data in one day than I had managed in the whole of April, and I’m immensely grateful. You were all very good sports and I’m conscious that you very kindly broke off from more convivial pursuits to help out. Finally it was good to put a face to so many names I’ve come to know over the internet: what a lovely bunch of people you all are! Hope to meet up with many of you again (and not just when I need data).

Arachne and I are hosting a get-together at the Vine Inn, 42-46 Kennedy St, Manchester, M2 4BQ, from 12.00 on Saturday 4 May. This is a final call to all fellow travellers to email me ( [email protected] ) to confirm their attendance (or send their apologies if they have received a better offer for the day). We are expecting around 40 to turn up. There will be a charge of £7.50 to cover costs, including food – a buffet will be provided.

As some of you will know from her recent comments, Sarah (Arachne/Anarche) is getting married today. John Henderson (Enigmatist et al) has produced a puzzle in honour of the occasion which will be handed out to all the guests. If you would like to have a go at solving this puzzle it can be found here.

Due to the limited response to the requests for nominations at the end of last month, John Halpern has decided that his time is better spent with other aspects of his Crossword Centenary activities. Consequently, no further nominations will be required.

This year is the centenary of the crossword, the first one being published in the New York World on December 21st 1913. To mark this, John Halpern (aka Paul, Mudd, Dada, Punk) is organising a series of events around the country during the year, culminating in a Crossword Awards ceremony in December.
