Beelzebub 1,231

Simon Harris.

A fairly steady, but certainly not over-easy, solve this week, I found. Many answers fell in smoothly, with a small handful (such as 12, 23 and 2) that I felt I should check before writing in. 31 across seems to be about the only word that fits, and certainly relates to taxes, but the wordplay has me beaten.

Beelzebub 1,229

Simon Harris.

I didn’t notice it while solving, but we’ve an unusual grid with which to work this week. In my own solving and blogging memory, Beelzebub has always been set on a 12*12 grid, whereas today we’ve a 13*11 to fill.

Beelzebub 1,227

Simon Harris.

A tough puzzle even by Beelzebub standards, which has taken me until now to finish, let alone explain. Still, I think I’ve managed to cover everything off.

Simon Harris.

Initially a fairly mid-paced week for me, but with a real struggle at the end, leaving a few clues unexplained. I’ve reproduced the relevant clues.

Beelzebub 1,223

Posted by Simon Harris on 18th August 2013

Simon Harris.

A reasonably smooth solve this week, perhaps due to some relatively uncomplicated wordplay in parts, and generally more accessible vocabulary than some weeks. Still there were a few to check in Chambers, and 15dn beat me entirely, though it seems tractable enough once one knows the answer!

Beelzebub 1,221

Simon Harris.

A relatively swift solve at first, though with plenty to check in Chambers before I could quite finish, let alone prepare a blog. Lots of abbreviations and reversals this week. 28ac partly escapes me even now.

Beelzebub 1,219

Simon Harris.

Whilst I’d hesitate to ever use the word “easy” about a Beelzebub puzzle, this one certainly seemed to reside at the more tractable end of the spectrum. I managed to finish unaided in a single session, which is a first, though there were one or two leaps of faith that required checking in Chambers later.
