Simon Harris.

Whilst I’d hesitate to ever use the word “easy” about a Beelzebub puzzle, this one certainly seemed to reside at the more tractable end of the spectrum. I managed to finish unaided in a single session, which is a first, though there were one or two leaps of faith that required checking in Chambers later.

Beelzebub 1,213

Simon Harris.

Post number 350 for me, and a tough week indeed. I made a very quick start, but ground to a halt with about a dozen entries down. Even taking Beelzebub to the pub midweek—often a boon for solving, is my excuse—resulted in little more than a grid liberally doused with Anchor Summer Beer. Still, I got there in the end, somehow. 16ac defies my best attempts at explanation, however.

Simon Harris.

This seemed a very tough week for me, though on blogging I’m not sure why, as everything seems to make sense. I suspect it was a combination of some tough vocabulary plus a good number of 12-letter entries, few of which I was familiar with prior to solving. Good stuff all the same, as always.

Beelzebub 1,209

Simon Harris.

The same weekend that Inquisitor is moved into the main paper, Beelzebub benefits from almost double the space we’re used to. The grid is commensurately huge, while the clues remain printed in the tiniest of fonts, giving even my mid-thirties eyes a weekly challenge almost as daunting as the crossword gives my brain.

Beelzebub 1,207

Simon Harris.

Well I never. It has been a while, but this was a rare unaided finish for your blogger. I suspect the enforced discipline of tackling the puzzle over a quiet pint or two up in SE19, without easy access to references, helped matters. That said, a few more stubborn entries held out until the following evening.

Simon Harris.

Apologies for the tardy post, and many thanks to Gaufrid for pointing out the oversight. This was quite a tough week, so there are a couple I haven’t been able to explain fully. I’ve reproduced the clues in those cases.
