(Please click here for this same blog but with a picture quiz added. Please do NOT post hereinbelow any comment relating to the picture quiz. Thank you.)  A standard Quiptic puzzle, with lots of anagrams to help the solver.  Enjoyable.  Thanks to Moley.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.

Guardian Quiptic 750 / Beale

Big Dave.

A workmanlike puzzle which, for me, lacked any clues with the “wow” factor.

Guardian Quiptic 749 / Nutmeg

Posted by Writinghawk on 24th March 2014

Writinghawk.

Nutmeg has as ever provided a nice crossword at a reasonably simple level, though the smooth surfaces may lead solvers up a few blind alleys. Anagrams are comparatively thin on the ground, but there are so many container-and-contents clues it is practically a handbook of different ways of indicating containment in a clue.

Guardian Quiptic 748/Pan

Posted by Pierre on 17th March 2014

Pierre.

This hit the spot for me.  You?  That said, the grid was a bit odd for a Quiptic, and I think one of the clues is faulty.

Guardian Quiptic 747 Hectence

Posted by scchua on 10th March 2014

scchua.

(Please click here for this same blog but with a picture quiz added. Please do NOT post hereinbelow any comment relating to the picture quiz. Thank you.)  This was an enjoyable puzzle from Hectence, with bits of it reminiscent of a Cryptic.  There were lots of letter deletions used in the clues, and some might find this, perhaps, too much of a good thing after a while.  Thanks to Hectence.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.

Guardian Quiptic 746 / Orlando

Posted by Big Dave on 3rd March 2014

Big Dave.

I was delighted to see that today’s puzzle was by one of my favourite Quiptic setters, and I wasn’t disappointed.  Just the ticket for new solvers.

Guardian Quiptic 745 / Provis

Writinghawk.

Provis appears to be a brand new setter, who has started with a well-judged Quiptic, with nothing too hard for improving solvers.

Quiptic 744/Hectence

Posted by Pierre on 17th February 2014

Pierre.

I thought this hit the spot for a Quiptic.  Good variety in the cluing; nothing too obscure; and where the wordplay was a little complicated, clear definitions.

The crossword was there all along, but mislabelled! It is now correctly placed at http://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/quiptic/743.

Guardian Quiptic 742 / Nutmeg

Posted by Big Dave on 3rd February 2014

Big Dave.

A workmanlike puzzle, lacking, for me, any stand-out clues, but then I’m no fan of improbable Spoonerisms.

Guardian Quiptic 741 / Moley

Posted by Writinghawk on 27th January 2014

Writinghawk.

Perhaps the setters are cycling in sync with the bloggers, since I’ve got Moley again. This one seemed just right for a Quiptic, the clues straightforward as they should be and a good variety of devices, and all quite sound give or take a couple of dubious anagram indicators.

Guardian Quiptic 740/Hectence

Posted by Pierre on 20th January 2014

Pierre.

I never really time myself when I’m doing a puzzle, but this Quiptic seemed to take a long time to nail down, which might mean it was trickier than it should have been.  The grid wasn’t very solver-friendly either.  More importantly, what did you think?

Guardian Quiptic 739 Pan

Just the right level of difficulty for a Quiptic, I thought.  Thanks to Pan.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.

Guardian Quiptic 738 / Nutmeg

Posted by Big Dave on 6th January 2014

Big Dave.

With the exception of a handful of clues I didn’t enjoy this puzzle, and thought that some of the complex wordplay was out of place in a Quiptic.  I hope someone can improve on my parsing of 8 down (and they did!).  Feel free to disagree!

Guardian Quiptic 737 – Moley

Posted by Writinghawk on 30th December 2013

Writinghawk.

Parts of this were certainly very easy but on the whole I thought it was rather hard for a Quiptic – partly because some clues were a bit woolly.
