This week’s Quiptic is by Orlando, one of my favourite setters.

Guardian Quiptic 760/Hectence

Posted by Pierre on 9th June 2014

Pierre.

I liked this Quiptic from Hectence.  It wasn’t all completely straightforward to solve or parse, but once you had a foothold I think an improving solver could be expected to work through the rest of the clues and then figure out what was going on.  Some excellent surfaces and a good variety of clue types.

Guardian Quiptic 759 / Provis

Posted by Gaufrid on 2nd June 2014

Gaufrid.

According to the Guardian website, Provis has only appeared twice before today, once in February and once in April. At that time I wasn’t solving the Quiptic on a regular basis and so this was my first encounter with this setter and therefore I didn’t know what to expect.

Guardian Quiptic 758/Pan

Posted by Pierre on 26th May 2014

Pierre.

A Quiptic that hits the spot from Pan this morning.  Some clever cluing and nothing too controversial.  I’m on a bit of a mission today, so just a brief blog (what do you mean, thank goodness for that?)

Guardian Quiptic 757 / Moley

Posted by Gaufrid on 19th May 2014

Gaufrid.

My apologies for the late appearance of this post. I needed to be reminded (thanks Pierre) that the scheduled blogger had not turned up. In the interest of minimising the lateness, I will mainly include just an analysis of the clues.

Guardian Quiptic 756/Nutmeg

Posted by Pierre on 12th May 2014

Pierre.

Nutmeg started setting for the Guardian Cryptic a while ago and her puzzles there have been well-received.  But I’m glad she’s still doing the Quiptic, because she generally manages to set an accessible puzzle with a good range of cluing devices, some clever wordplay and smooth surfaces.  Just like this one.

Guardian Quiptic 755 / Orlando

Posted by Gaufrid on 5th May 2014

Gaufrid.

I would say that this is probably an ideal Quiptic. Nothing too complicated or obscure but smooth surfaces and an enjoyable solve. I commend in particular the excellent 8dn.

Guardian Quiptic 754 / Hectence

Big Dave.

A delightful puzzle, albeit a tad difficult for a Quiptic.

Guardian Quiptic 753 / Pan

Posted by Gaufrid on 21st April 2014

Gaufrid.

Today was going to be Writinghawk’s final appearance as he will be leaving the country shortly and going to a location with poor/no internet access. However, it seems that something has prevented him from turning up.

Guardian Quiptic 752/Provis

Posted by Pierre on 14th April 2014

Pierre.

A quick look at the archive suggests that this is only Provis’s second appearance, and my first chance to blog him or her.  I thought this was a fine Quiptic.  Nothing to frighten the horses – as should be the case – and a pleasing variety of clue types with some good choices of anagram.  He or she has an eye for a good surface too.

(Please click here for this same blog but with a picture quiz added. Please do NOT post hereinbelow any comment relating to the picture quiz. Thank you.)  A standard Quiptic puzzle, with lots of anagrams to help the solver.  Enjoyable.  Thanks to Moley.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.

Guardian Quiptic 750 / Beale

Big Dave.

A workmanlike puzzle which, for me, lacked any clues with the “wow” factor.

Guardian Quiptic 749 / Nutmeg

Posted by Writinghawk on 24th March 2014

Writinghawk.

Nutmeg has as ever provided a nice crossword at a reasonably simple level, though the smooth surfaces may lead solvers up a few blind alleys. Anagrams are comparatively thin on the ground, but there are so many container-and-contents clues it is practically a handbook of different ways of indicating containment in a clue.

Guardian Quiptic 748/Pan

Posted by Pierre on 17th March 2014

Pierre.

This hit the spot for me.  You?  That said, the grid was a bit odd for a Quiptic, and I think one of the clues is faulty.

Guardian Quiptic 747 Hectence

Posted by scchua on 10th March 2014

scchua.

(Please click here for this same blog but with a picture quiz added. Please do NOT post hereinbelow any comment relating to the picture quiz. Thank you.)  This was an enjoyable puzzle from Hectence, with bits of it reminiscent of a Cryptic.  There were lots of letter deletions used in the clues, and some might find this, perhaps, too much of a good thing after a while.  Thanks to Hectence.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.
