A straightforward Quiptic. Thanks to Nutmeg for some enjoyable surfaces. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom of the blog have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

Orlando is one of a couple of Quiptic setters whose puzzles I always enjoy solving. Today I wasn’t disappointed. Read the rest of this entry »

It is always a pleasure to see the name Arachne at the head of a crossword.

Generally a sound puzzle from Pan, but with one or two slightly unusual words. To be fair, these were well signposted.

I found this, in parts, trickier than the usual Quiptic, taking longer to complete as a result. But no complaints, and thank you to Nutmeg. My COD was the very clever 13down. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose comments about them in double brackets.]]

I came off the bench to do a rushed blog for Orlando’s Guardian cryptic puzzle last week, and we come across each other again this morning. I thought this was a nicely constructed Quiptic which fulfilled its brief to be suitable for ‘beginners and those in a hurry’. I wasn’t in a particular hurry today, though, and enjoyed the range of cluing devices and story-telling surfaces.

An enjoyable Arachne, perhaps a shade more difficult than the usual Quiptic. Thanks Arachne – a great job at setting puzzles at both ends of the difficulty spectrum. Definitions are underlined in the clues. Apologies for the later than usual posting (lunch appointment). [[The pictures at the bottom of the blog have unidentified links to the puzzle.]]

This was a considerable improvement on the last Quiptic by Pan that I reviewed, but I was a tad disappointed that the puzzle number failed to lead to Revelations about The Beast! Read the rest of this entry »

I was wondering why there was no Quiptic blog yet; then I discovered that I was due to write it. I think this hits just the right note for a Quiptic.

We haven’t seen Beale in the Quiptic slot for some time, and while this was on the whole a fair puzzle, it seemed to me to contain a good number of clues that might prove over-tricky for the target audience.

Thanks Hectence for an enjoyable puzzle, though there are a couple of gaps in the parsing I can’t fill in. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[Eaach of the pictures at the bottom has an identified link to the puzzle.]]

I was just about to pick up this puzzle when there was a loud clap of thunder, and my cable went down hard – no internet, phone or TV; and it stayed that way for three hours. Fortunately, Orlando came up with crossword that I could sail through (I do not think I will catch so much flak for saying that this time!), and I hope the blog is up too scratch, if a little rushed. And the internet stayed up, even though thunder continues to rumble around.
