Guardian Quiptic 734 / Pan

Big Dave.

Apart from the overly-creative use of abbreviations this was a very enjoyable puzzle.

Guardian Quiptic 733 / Nutmeg

Posted by Writinghawk on 2nd December 2013

Writinghawk.

As you probably discovered, having so many unchecked letters at the start of words makes a crossword a bit harder to start with, but the ‘unchecked’ first letters were really checked after all as the rubric explained, since they spelt out part of a bonus message.

Guardian Quiptic 732/Hectence

Posted by Pierre on 25th November 2013

Pierre.

I am a bit late on parade this morning, partly because I found bits of this quite tricky.  There were certainly a good number of genuinely Quiptic clues to get you going, but the NE corner took me ages to figure out.

This was an enjoyable, though perhaps on the easy side, Quiptic.  Thanks to Pan.  Definitions are underlined in the clues.  [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle.  Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets.  Thank you.]]

A workmanlike puzzle which should be suitable for new solvers.

Guardian Quiptic 729 / Orlando

Posted by Writinghawk on 4th November 2013

Writinghawk.

A typical delight from Orlando – the clues are very straightforward as befits a Quiptic, yet carefully crafted to give smooth and witty surface readings.

Guardian Quiptic 728/Beale

Posted by Pierre on 28th October 2013

Pierre.

Oh dear.  I’m in danger of turning into Mr Grump.  This is the second puzzle I’ve blogged this morning that I haven’t liked much.  I’m a big fan of the Quiptic and keep bigging it up to friends who, knowing I’m keen on my crosswords, want to have a go.  Not sure I’d recommend this one, though.  In my opinion, it’s far too complicated in some places, and the cluing is ambiguous in other places.  But I’m not the target audience, so you tell me what you thought.

Guardian Quiptic 727 Pan

What one would expect of a Quiptic, maybe slightly easier than most.  Thanks to Pan.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

While this puzzle has a varied selection of types of clue, I was unhappy with a few of them.

Guardian Quiptic 725 / Nutmeg

Posted by Writinghawk on 7th October 2013

Writinghawk.

This enjoyable crossword from Nutmeg provides a tour through most of the tricks a setter uses. I thought it on the tough side for a Quiptic, but fair, since it didn’t use obscure constructions, and mostly avoided over-complicated ones, except perhaps in the NE corner. (Yeah, 5 across, I’m looking at you and your friends.) One clue was made harder by what I can only think is a mistake.

Guardian Quiptic 724/Pan

Posted by Pierre on 30th September 2013

Pierre.

Well done to Pan – this Quiptic hit the spot, for me at least.  Clear cluing, no obscurities, friendly grid and nothing to frighten the children (well, maybe apart from 23dn …)

Guardian Quiptic 723 Moley

As advertised, an easy enough Quiptic, enjoyable, but finished before long.  Thanks to Moley.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

Guardian Quiptic 722 / Orlando

Posted by Big Dave on 16th September 2013

Big Dave.

Orlando is one of my favourite Quiptic setters and once again he produces a puzzle that is ideal for this slot. Three hidden answers would normally be one too many for a puzzle, but they are all in the right-hand column, which makes them into a bit of a gimmick.

Guardian Quiptic 721 / Hectence

Posted by Writinghawk on 9th September 2013

Rather tricky for a Quiptic, wasn’t it? In addition Hectence makes very free use throughout of two devices that even moderate purists will not approve of.

Guardian Quiptic 720/ Nutmeg

Posted by Pierre on 2nd September 2013

Pierre.

It’s a Quiptic, Jim, but not as we know it …

At least that’s what I thought, but you will no doubt put me right.  It’s a generally sound puzzle throughout from Nutmeg, but there are some constructions that seemed a bit out of place in a Quiptic.  The grid didn’t help either: two puzzles for the price of one with the north and south bits being barely connected.  And a comparative paucity of anagrams, which are the improving solver’s usual way into getting a foothold on a cryptic crossword.
