Guardian Quiptic 721 / Hectence

Posted by Writinghawk on 9th September 2013

Writinghawk.

Rather tricky for a Quiptic, wasn’t it? In addition Hectence makes very free use throughout of two devices that even moderate purists will not approve of.

Guardian Quiptic 720/ Nutmeg

Posted by Pierre on 2nd September 2013

Pierre.

It’s a Quiptic, Jim, but not as we know it …

At least that’s what I thought, but you will no doubt put me right.  It’s a generally sound puzzle throughout from Nutmeg, but there are some constructions that seemed a bit out of place in a Quiptic.  The grid didn’t help either: two puzzles for the price of one with the north and south bits being barely connected.  And a comparative paucity of anagrams, which are the improving solver’s usual way into getting a foothold on a cryptic crossword.

Guardian Quiptic 719/Pan

Posted by Pierre on 26th August 2013

Pierre.

A fine puzzle from Pan. Full of charades, anagrams, hidden answers and insertions, with nary a cryptic or double definition in sight (well, maybe just one …)  Just what a Quiptic should be.

Guardian Quiptic 718 / Moley

Posted by Big Dave on 19th August 2013

Big Dave.

Moley once again hits the right level for a Quiptic, but I found one or two of the clues to be a bit disappointing

Guardian Quiptic 717 / Orlando

Posted by Writinghawk on 12th August 2013

Writinghawk.

Greetings from a newcomer to 15^2, where I am joining the Quiptic team. I’m delighted to be here, since the Quiptic is a splendid institution, and doubly so to be starting with this excellent puzzle from Orlando, which is all a Quiptic should be: straightforward, thoroughly fair, and with a good helping of wit.

Guardian Quiptic 716/Hectence

Posted by Pierre on 5th August 2013

Pierre.

I enjoyed solving and blogging Hectence’s puzzle this morning, but I fancy the target audience might have found it a bit of a struggle.  There were some excellent surfaces, but often, in my opinion at least, at the expense of some complicated wordplay.  But getting better at cryptics is a learning process, and there was some stuff here to learn.  Including, in my case, how on earth to parse 1d.  Which I think I have done, just.

Guardian Quiptic 715 Nutmeg

Posted by scchua on 29th July 2013

scchua.

A nice ‘n’ easy puzzle, as a Quiptic should be, from a regular Quiptic setter.  Thanks to Nutmeg.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

Guardian Quiptic 712/Orlando

Posted by Pierre on 8th July 2013

Pierre.

People have said previously that Orlando has mastered the art of the Quiptic, and I think this was another example of that.  Plenty of anagrams to get you going, plenty of wit, and each clue pointing the solver unequivocally towards the answer.  A super puzzle, just right for the target audience in my opinion.

Guardian Quiptic 711 Hectence

Posted by scchua on 1st July 2013

scchua.

This was quite straightforward except for a few (14, 22 and 13 down) which took slightly longer than the others.  Thanks to Hectence.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

Guardian Quiptic 708/Moley

Posted by Pierre on 10th June 2013

Pierre.

A Quiptic from Moley that is clearly aimed at the target audience, but which I found a bit clunky in places, with some unconvincing cluing at times.  Perhaps I’m being a bit unfair.

Guardian Quiptic 707 Beale

Posted by scchua on 3rd June 2013

scchua.

A standard Quiptic, made simpler, for me at least, by the many anagrams.  Thanks to Beale, who is not a frequent setter here.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]
