A fine Quiptic from Arachne – everything clearly clued, a good range of devices, no obscurities, and some wit thrown in for good measure. I’m sure others will have enjoyed this as much as I did. Apologies for the slightly late blog, but I had to redo the whole thing after Microsoft Windows had a hissy fit and sent my first version into cyberspace heaven. Any suggestions for revenge tactics welcome.

Assuming that many Quiptic solvers are also Cryptic ones and considering that I won’t be blogging a Cryptic until next week, here are apologies to you for my absence last Thursday. I was in hospital after an emergency, and was incommunicado/out of action. I (rather, my wife on my behalf) just managed to send an e-mail to Gaufrid about my being incapacitated. But, as I learned much later, after it was too late, by one of those coincidences, Gaufrid too was incommunicado/out of action, and couldn’t take appropriate action. I hope things turn out okay for him. Thanks too to Eileen for stepping in. Well, back home now, and back to business for me. Today’s Quiptic was quite straightforward, except the last handful took a bit longer to crack. There were some good surfaces, and some cleverly hidden answers. Thanks Pan. Definitions are underlined in the clues.

Nutmeg once again gives us a puzzle which is just right for the Quiptic genre. The usual variety of clues with nothing that should be beyond the newer solver.

Moley gives us a pleasant variety of devices clueing mostly familiar word – which fills the Quiptic description very adequately. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s a Quiptic, Jim, but not as we know it … It might have just been a bad day at the office for me, but this was harder than many a Guardian cryptic that I’ve solved. Perhaps you’ll tell me otherwise.

A typical Orlando Quiptic, compact clues, mainly cryptic/double definitions and anagrams, and all easily enjoyable. Thanks Orlando. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom each has an unidentified link to the puzzle. Please double-bracket comments about them thus]] Thank you.

Not a puzzle that I can say I enjoyed, and it wasn’t helped by a couple of errors and a typo.

A pleasing Quiptic from Nutmeg, but she has included a number of cryptic definitions, which I found slightly tricky. Overall though, a well-constructed puzzle, with just one clue that I can’t quite get my head round.

The only Moley Quiptic I have blogged was also my first on 15sq. I don’t recall the details of the first, except that it was quite straightforward, and today’s is the same. Thanks Moley. Definitions are underlined in the clues. Each of the pictures at the bottom has an unidentified connection to the crossword.

One of the harder Quiptics that I have reviewed, but there are plenty of different types of clue utilised.

I found this slow going at first, because of the lack of answers which leapt out at me, but it came out handily in the end. Read the rest of this entry »

A couple of surprises when I opened up this morning’s puzzle: a new setter, and a theme. I can’t ever remember there being a themed Quiptic before (although there was a hidden message in one a while back) and I’m wondering if it’s appropriate for the Quiptic’s target audience. Anyway, perhaps some of that target audience will say what they think.

This was one of the very much easier Quiptics. Thanks Orlando, for the double and cryptic definitions and anagrams, and for the absence of obscure words, whether dialect, slang, English or foreign. Definitions are underlined in the clues.

I must remember to do the lottery on Saturday, as this must be my lucky week – my second Arachne Quiptic in succession! Perhaps a little harder than some Quiptics, but the smile count is high.
