Independent 8532 / Donk

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 18th February 2014

Bertandjoyce.

Regular solvers may remember Donk’s last puzzle, which we were very lucky to blog on January 9th -  a real tour de force. In our opinion it would be very difficult to beat that one but today’s offering was very enjoyable. There were the usual slightly risqué surface readings and many DOH moments when we sorted out the parsings!

Independent 8531 by Quixote

Posted by NealH on 17th February 2014

NealH.

I found this at the harder end of the Quixote spectrum, with quite a lot of fairly unusual words. Clues like 13 and 5 were tough to get without most of the crossing letters.

‘Jambazi’ is ‘Tramp’s Indy pseudonym, but on closer inspection of this puzzle, could he also be ‘Cyclops’ in disguise?…

Phi often does interesting things with the letters and words in the grid – today he has done something different by using a grid with reflective symmetry.

Independent 8,528 by Tyrus

Posted by John on 13th February 2014

John.

Tyrus has given us his usual good tough crossword, and in places I’m not really sure that I’ve got it right, but no doubt someone will correct me. At least I have always suggested something, although with little confidence at times.

And if there’s a Nina, as usual I can’t see it.

Independent 8527 / Dac

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 12th February 2014

Bertandjoyce.

Another Wednesday, another Dac and we’re not complaining. As RatkojaRiku said in the blog last week, it is always very difficult to pick a favourite with Dac’s puzzles.

Independent 8525/Tees

Posted by Pierre on 10th February 2014

Pierre.

Indy regulars will know that there were no Tees in last Thursday’s Nestor puzzle; but there was a good helping of Tees today.  A delightful crossword, which I really enjoyed solving and blogging.  There are a couple where I could do with some help in the parsing.

Independent on Sunday 1250/Hypnos

Another very pleasing Sunday puzzle from Hypnos in the usual IoS style.  All clearly and elegantly clued, with a good range of subject matter in the answers to enjoy.

Independent Saturday Prize Puzzle 8518 – Monk – 1st Feb 2014

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 8th February 2014

Bertandjoyce.

This was an enjoyable solve – thanks Monk! As usual, there were some lovely surfaces and a few tricky ones to parse including 17ac, if we have sorted it out correctly.

Independent 8,523 by Phi

Posted by John on 7th February 2014

John.

Phi has as always given us a very pleasant crossword. In a couple of places my reading of things is slightly at variance with his, but no doubt someone will put me right.

I’m not sure who the person is, but he appears centrally in the unches at the top and the bottom. Oh yes, I’ve just Googled him and this is probably who he is. No doubt there are references to him dotted around the grid.

Independent 8522 – Nestor

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 6th February 2014

Bertandjoyce.

Well, this one took a bit of head-scratching in places, but we suppose we should expect that of a Thursday Indy puzzle. However, there were several unusual or unfamiliar words, and we needed to google some of them to check the answers, which were otherwise pretty clear from the wordplay.
