Independent 8,849 by Knut

Posted by John on 24th February 2015

John.

Knut made his debut only the other day. Now he appears again, and much of this continues the good start he made. There is a lot I don’t understand; my temptation is to say that some of the clues are a bit weak or unsound, but I don’t dare to because it’s far more likely that I’m missing things.

It’s a very strange grid — perfectly OK and no solecisms with the checking. Was this, together with the large number of clues, done in order to fit in some theme? If it was then I can’t see it.

Definitions underlined.

Independent on Sunday 1,304 by Hypnos

Posted by PeeDee on 22nd February 2015

PeeDee.

I liked this grid with words all the way round the border, it is a long while since I saw one of these.  Good to have the minimum of black space on the grid, value for money!

There are a couple of clues where I don’t quite get the wording, even though I’m sure I have the correct answer.  Thanks to Hypnos for an enjoyable Sunday solve.

Independent 8,841 by Nestor (Saturday Prize Puzzle, 21/02/15)

Posted by Simon Harris on 21st February 2015

Simon Harris.

Nestor has sometimes been described as one of the easier of the Saturday Independent setters. I guess these things are relative, as I found this one quite a challenge.

Independent 8,846 / Phi

Posted by RatkojaRiku on 20th February 2015

RatkojaRiku.

As expected, today saw my monthly tussle with Phi.

I found this one quite tough, not least, I feel, because of the high frequency of 4-letter entries. I solved clues steadily but didn’t really feel that I was breaking the back of the puzzle until towards the very end of the solve. In the end, I was left with the clue at 3 (not surprisingly, one of the 4-letter words), which I feared I wouldn’t be able to solve, but I went away and came back and could then see how the clue worked.

Independent 8,844 by Dac

Posted by John on 18th February 2015

John.

What new is there to say about Dac? Every clue tells a little story. I have misgivings about ‘provided’ as an anagram indicator in 4dn, and I suspect that there might be a typo in 12dn, since my suggestion is so simple that I can’t see why Dac didn’t do it that way (although now that I look more closely he may be right all along, the two words necessitating a verb without s; not sure about this — perhaps someone who knows about these things could drop in and tell us); but a small price to pay for a day of Dac.

Independent 8,839 by Monk

Posted by John on 12th February 2015

John.

Rather a difficult Monk today I thought, but as usual very enjoyable. There are one or two loose ends which, thanks to the wisdom of those reading this blog, should be tied up before the end of the day.

And of course there’s the Nina, which I half saw and then forgot, to be reminded by Herb @1, who saw rather more than I did. The bottom row is a clear statement, so I looked at the top and couldn’t understand what was happening. All explained below. Very good. I can’t see why Herb thinks he hasn’t got it, for it clearly refers to the Russian novel.

Definitions underlined.

Independent 8838 / Dac

Posted by Gaufrid on 11th February 2015

Gaufrid.

One or two unfamiliar words for me today. I think I have met 23ac before (but had forgotten it) but 17ac was certainly new and I don’t think I would have got it without most of the checked letters and a wildcard search of Chambers.
