Independent 8614 by Tyrus (Saturday Prize Puzzle 24 May 2014)

Posted by mc_rapper67 on 31st May 2014

mc_rapper67.

A good, honest cryptic work-out from Tyrus this week – no fancy themes or Ninas (that I could see, anyway), just a ‘Ronseal’ puzzle - does what it says on the tin…

Independent 8,619 by Phi

Posted by John on 30th May 2014

John.

Phi is approaching Dac status: it is hard to find new things to say about him, because his crosswords are always so good and sound and there are hardly any points where you have any doubts.

I have looked for ages at the completed grid, and apart from the fact that at one point in the unches you can read “he did us”, which is probably just chance, I can see nothing. Unless this is some reference to the book and Conan Doyle, which doesn’t seem to be the case. But knowing Phi there will be something.

Definitions in italics.

Independent 8615/Raich

Posted by Pierre on 26th May 2014

Pierre.

I was pleased when I saw Raich’s name at the top of the grid this morning, because I enjoy having a go at his puzzles.  I liked this one, except for two intersecting clues in the SE corner which I felt were a bit iffy and which held me up in completing that quadrant.

Independent 8613 / Phi

Posted by Bertandjoyce on 23rd May 2014

Bertandjoyce.

Bert and Joyce are sharing the blog write up this week and we are slightly at odds with our feelings about the puzzle. The solve was thankfully fairly quick, for which we were very thankful as we are currently walking the Dales Way. During the solve we weren’t as impressed as usual on a Friday  but as Joyce wrote up the clues she wondered whether that was just because we were under a time pressure this week! There were some lovely surface readings – 9d in particular!

Independent 8,610 by Radian

Posted by John on 20th May 2014

John.

A high-quality crossword from Radian which took me longer than it should have done in retrospect, since the clues are generally quite clear, as witness the fact that many of the explanations below have been explained without words.

The theme is 18ac words, of which we have examples in 11ac (probably), 25ac, 13dn, 15dn, 19dn and no doubt several others that I can’t immediately see. There are some words, like 4dn or 23dn, whose letters are formed in a certain way, but they are not so far as I know 18ac words.

Definitions in italics.
