Independent 8524 by Jambazi (Saturday Prize Puzzle 8 February 2014)

‘Jambazi’ is ‘Tramp’s Indy pseudonym, but on closer inspection of this puzzle, could he also be ‘Cyclops’ in disguise?…

On my initial solve, this seemed a fairly straightforward puzzle – suitably difficult for a Saturday prize crossword, with a few nice touches and smile-inducing moments – but no obvious theme or nina…

However, on revisiting it to write the blog, a darker, smuttier undercurrent soon became apparent…

References to ‘Mayfair’ and ‘Penthouse’; Lad mags and ‘modesty bags’; TOP SHELF = FLESHPOT in 16D; a pawn/porn homophone; ‘topless obsession’ in 3D; ‘hot models’ stripping in 25A to become UNCLOTHEd; a ‘bird’ folded across ‘centre sheets’ in 21D…and a reference to Cosmo in 1A as a bit of balance for the ladies?!

Maybe I am seeing too much here – and revealing more about myself and my adolescent past than I should be? – but I suspect Jambazi is enjoying a cruciverbal riffle through the top shelf of his local newsagent – although I’m not sure if this is completely suitable material as a precursor to Valentine’s Day?…I’m off for a cold shower and a lie-down…

  1. Ditto dormouse. I remember an anax on similar lines that got rejected by the ed a couple of years ago. Nice one Neil

  2. I didn’t find this one of Jambazi’s easier puzzles, and I particularly struggled in the bottom half. I had to check AFFLATUS before I was happy to enter it even though it looked more likely than “afflatam”, and MAY CONTAIN NUTS was my LOI after I finally saw UNCLOTHE.

  3. Thanks for the blog mc_rapper67 and thanks for the comments. 9a/7a should say “MOUNTAIN SHEEP”.

Whilst sitting in a café on holiday in Northumberland last summer, the TV was showing Sky News. They were covering the story about supermarkets wanting lads’ mags to be placed in modesty bags. I figured that was an interesting term and it featured ‘mags’ around the outside. I made a note in my notebook but did nothing with it until I came across the term ‘may contain nuts’. I already had the ‘mountain sheep’ clue in my notebook so I wrote this puzzle. Hope it wasn’t too rude.

    Neil

  4. Thanks Jambazi – an entertaining puzzle – we do hope that 4d was not one of the themed words! Thankfully, it passed Joyce by – she has obviously led a more sheltered life than Bert!!

  5. Thanks for all the feedback and comments – and to Jambazi/Neil for giving some background on the puzzle.

I did wonder about mentioning 4D, but thought I’d probably dug a big enough hole for myself already…there is also an apposite slang term involving 2D and a colour, but let’s not even go there!…

  6. Really enjoyed this. Thought the MODESTY BAG and MAY CONTAIN NUTS link was a very good joke. Liked MOUNTAIN SHEEP, DREADS, GOAD and OUSEL especially for their relevance to the theme.

  7. Thanks J and mc. Found this quite hard but very enjoyable. I was solving this in the pub, eating a bag of peanuts when I saw 12d/22d. My laughter probably made those near me think I was NUTS – one of the best, cheeky clues in ages.

  8. Thanks for the blog, mc. I’m very belated because I only got around to the puzzle today. I don’t normally comment when I’m this late checking solutions on 225 but this was such a delight I had to join in.

I hope Neil is still checking the comments.

As I solved it I felt a little uneasy about how far the naughtiness might stretch but genuinely laughed out loud when I sussed 12/22. I had no idea that Jambazi is a Tramp in disguise but I should have guessed. His puzzles are bouncing on my wave length.

I couldn’t parse 18 and 24 so thank you, mc, for those.
