Fairly straightforward crossword, with some good clues and one I couldn’t work out (23ac – thanks BenIngton). After the fare served up by Brummie and Paul so far this week, this was less exciting to solve, especially once I had filled in the four easy and long clues going down.
ACROSS
1 RUMINATE – homophone of ROOM INNATE
11 INNUENDO – IN + (undone)*
13 ASPIRATION – A + (in)SPIRATION
15 CHASSIS – CH + ASSIS(t)
16 ILLEGAL – homphone of ILL EAGLE
18 OCEAN-GOING – not sure this works properly because the “in” in the clue is misleading and/or superfluous.
19 OVER – (c)OVER, cover being a fielding position in cricket.
23 REMOVE – See comment from BenIngton below.
24 UNOPENED – took me a while to get this, because I don’t think “unblocked” is a good definition for “unopened”, but I did like the “blocked when not bowled” for “locked” (ie (b)locked).
DOWN
1 TURNED THE CORNER – two meanings, although if anyone “turned the corner” of a page of any of my books, they’d be sorry!
2 DISSATISFACTION – DI-(is fast as)*-CTION
4 PERIAPT – (a tipper)* – a charm or amulet worn to protect one from mischief, and the only word in the puzzle I didn’t know – although I worked it out from the anagram fodder and the checked letters.
5 STUN – (<=nuts) – good, simple clue.
6 UNDER THE COUNTER – two meanings.
17 HIDEOUS – HIDE + OUS(e)
Re 23a – it is REMOVE – a form or class in a school as fans of Billy Bunter will remember.
