I got on better with this than the previous Tyrus puzzles. Unless I’m being dense there’s no really strong theme. I can’t quite explain 2D.

9 ROOFERS = (for Rose)* – one of the easiest, with the arbitrary name giving away the anag fodder.

11 POWERDRESSING – tough wordplay to untangle. It’s ROWED* in PRESSING=”needing immediate attention”, with the order of containment reversed by “on the contrary”.

2 GOODWIN – Fred=(27) Goodwin is the recently retired chief exec. of RBS. I can see WIN=clean up, but not retire=GOOD which I assume is the first part of a charade. Or just maybe I’m looking for somthing that’s not there and the first part of the clue is simply bitter political commentary.

  3. Thought there was an underlying theme – “Rip off Britain” – with a suitable characterisation of Fred the Shred in that context. “Girl discarded” was very nice touch and liked the clever inclusion of the two managers.
