Solving time: 30 mins
I got on better with this than the previous Tyrus puzzles. Unless I’m being dense there’s no really strong theme. I can’t quite explain 2D.
Across | |
---|---|
1 | HIGH = “hi” – steep=high probably works best of you think of prices. |
3/27 | RIGHT SAID FRED – or RIGHT=sound,SAD=unhappy,FIRED=sacked, with I=one changing its place. |
9 | ROOFERS = (for Rose)* – one of the easiest, with the arbitrary name giving away the anag fodder. |
10 | AIR=look,HEAD=boss |
11 | POWERDRESSING – tough wordplay to untangle. It’s ROWED* in PRESSING=”needing immediate attention”, with the order of containment reversed by “on the contrary”. |
13 | SANDWORMS=(dons swarm)* |
15 | T(reated),OR SO=roughly |
16 | (s)ENTRY |
18 | IMPATIENT – cash = PAT (Wimbledon champ 1987, still seen nattering to Sue Barker at this time of year) inside (in time)* |
20 | RIP(e),OFF=bad,B(RITA)IN – the “girl discarded” is RITA in the BIN. |
24 | SPINNER – 2 defs |
25 | REST=lie down,O=nothing,RE=on=concerning |
26 | FUEL COSTS – (F,C,USE LOTS)* |
Down | |
1 | HARD-PUSHED – short of money = “hard-up”, in which the P=quietly is lifted by one place, SHED=cast. |
2 | GOODWIN – Fred=(27) Goodwin is the recently retired chief exec. of RBS. I can see WIN=clean up, but not retire=GOOD which I assume is the first part of a charade. Or just maybe I’m looking for somthing that’s not there and the first part of the clue is simply bitter political commentary. |
3 | R(IS)E(a)R |
4 | GRASSES UP – (A S.S.) in purges* |
5 | TARSI – reverse hidden |
6 | AVENGER – swap W for V in “A Wenger” = manager (of Arsenal F.C.) |
7 | DID,O – a singer |
8 | TEARAWAY – cross referenced to the “rip-off” in 20. |
12 | (Henry) COTTON=golfer,WEED = “got relief”. Cottonweed is a plant also called cudweed |
14 | RAIL(FA,RE)S |
15 | T(ATTI(c))EST |
17 | TUR=rut rev.,B(IN)E |
19 | ENA,MOUR(inho) – our second football manager. José Mourinho was known as the “Special One” |
21 | (his)PANIC |
22 | BORIS – Boris and Ken here are Mayors of London. O in BaRbIeS |
23 | AS IF – Asif could be this film director or maybe just a common Pakistani name, not sure. |
WP for 2Dn I think is GO (retire) + DO (clean) rev. + WIN (a satisfying result).
23D Current President of Pakistan is Asif Ali Zardari.
Thought there was an underlying theme – “Rip off Britain” – with a suitable characterisation of Fred the Shred in that context. “Girl discarded” was very nice touch and liked the clever inclusion of the two managers.
I enjoyed this amusing puzzle, which I found quite tough.
What’s Fred the Shred up to these days?…
