Thanks, scchua.
7d seems to be a direct lift from an old episode of I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again.
Thanks JASON and scchua – a very pleasant solve although 7d was new to me as well.
[[Pic 1 is a Great Dane – not sure of the connection unless it’s related to the Vikings who were notoriously 1a (or 9a which had ‘dog’ in the clue). Pic 2 is an abalone mushroom (20d). Pic 3 (box), Pic 4 (Pandora, a moon of Saturn) and pic 7 (from Avatar which featured a fictional Pandora moon) all relate to 19d. Pic 5 is Chewbacca from Star Wars who co-pilots the Millennium Falcon, which presumably relates to Kes in the solution to 16a (kestrels are falcons). Pic 6 shows a pancake (23a) save in volleyball.]]
[[Partly correct, Steve. Answers to pics 2, 4, 7 and 6 are absolutely right. Hint: The 7 pics between them have links to 4 of the answers, and there are no other Pandora links (beside pics 4 and 7).]]
[[OK – I now see (with the help of Wikipedia) that pic 3 is a set of apple boxes which are used in the film industry. The smallest one is presumably a ‘pancake’ which is an eighth of a full size Apple box. As for pics 1 and 5, over to you!]]
