Flashling is away in foreign climes so you have the pleasure, or otherwise, of my company today.
Raich has provided us with a pleasant and generally gradual start to the new week though I am at a loss as to how to adequately explain 14ac. Not being too familiar with American history I do not know if it is a true &lit or if it just a cryptic way of associating freedom and liberty. I was also unable to resolve the issue of two apparent anagram indicators in 6dn and 7dn though of course they do improve the surface.

Raich is a setter where if you stick with him, he’ll always get you over the line. Just two or three that I struggled a bit with this morning. WATERMAN and EGYPTIAN were my last two in. I was in DENNIS THE MENACE mode for too long.
I too took LIBERTY BELL to be an &lit kind of clue.
No footie references from Raich today, which given the parlous state of our team is probably wise.
A very enjoyable puzzle.
I saw the clue for LIBERTY BELL as a straight &lit, and a pretty good one at that. I thought the additional anagram indicators in 6dn and 7dn were only there to help the surface readings rather than deliberately confuse. FOREBEARS was my LOI, possibly because of the unhelpful checkers.
No not & lit.It is a nice ‘extended definitiomn ‘ clue though.
Very good.
Enjoyed this. Liked LIBERTY BELL and thought EDELWEISS was very neat.
Merci Gaufrid. in foreign climes and climbs, over 3800 metres, could barely breathe. For some reason could not see the puzzle today. Will try soon. Happy birthday a moi.
Thanks Gaufrid – Joyce always likes seeing your owl!
We’ve caught up with this one a bit late but enjoyed the challenge. Started OK, slowed down, speeded up and then a slow finish! WATERMAN was out last one in – we also couldn’t stop thinking about the Menace!
Cheers Raich and belated Happy Birthday to flashing.
