Azed 2193

This was a standard plain crossword from Azed with the usual mix of precise cluing and unfamiliar words.

I got into this through the two long down clues – CLAPTRAPPERY and BARRISTERIAL at 4 and 5 which were no more difficult than clues in a broadsheet daily puzzle. KITEMARK (14 across) also fell quickly as did  ACARIDAN (9 down),  TITOKI (23 down) and REDIA (25 down).  It helped that I had just come across a slightly different spelling of the monkey (TEE-TEE) in an Inquisitor crossword.

After that, things slowed down a bit as the less familiar words came in to play.  Sometimes Azed’s anagrams are very clearly signaled, so LUCARNE (20 down) wasn’t too difficult.

Clues I liked today included those for ALTAR where the letters to be excluded formed a clearly defined anagram, IBIBIO for it’s use of two Nigerian tribes and ORNAMENT (17 down) for the cleverly disguised anagram of NOT.

As usual with Azed, there were a couple of wordplays that I didn’t resolve fully until I came to write the blog.  There’s no doubt that writing a blog makes you think more about the parsing of the entries rather than just saying ‘that must be right’.

Thanks duncan, not much to add except not having access to my BRB because of moving made for very careful checking of the parsing as did the omission of the “2 words” bit of 19a in the online version, something that seems to have happened at least once today as well.
