What’s the catch? well this week in crosswording terms there are 20 answers to be entered with empty cells.
Otherwise straight clues and certainly at the easier end of the EV spectrum with respect to the clueing – in my opinion anyway.
The grid slowly took shape around the edges and soon the blank cells started to appear. On completion of the grid these showed the word FISH.

The final bit of the preamble –
Answers in the top, middle and bottom rows and the middle column share an alternative thematic definition – these are indeed all fish. MULLET, TAILOR, ARGENTINE, SANDER and MEGRIM. BRAISE and SHINER too – thanks to Samuel for pointing out my oversight.
Thanks Piccadilly – just the right level for a busy summer time.

I first saw this one a while back but thought it was fun. Not as hard as it looked at first, and some great clues, with a very pleasing final grid — just nice to see it all tie together. Great construction, thanks Piccadilly.
I don’t often do the EV these days but I found myself with nothing to do that particular Sunday. I finished it fairly easily but nonetheless enjoyably.
Having solved it, I then passed it to my daughter, elmac, and she completed her first barred crossword, unaided. If anyone’s looking to pass a nice entry-level puzzle on to a novice, then this would be a good choice.
Thanks to Picadilly and thanks Twencelas.
