Guardian Quiptic 767 with Picture Quiz

(Please post comments on ONLY the picture quiz hereinbelow.  To post comments on the crossword puzzle, please click here.)  I think this was of the right difficulty for a Quiptic, though 12 across is ambiguous until you get the checking letter. Still, no major problem. Thanks to Pan. Definitions are underlined in the clues.

There appear to be some answers/clues which are linked to one another. Thus, Anthony Trollope/Barchester Towers, toga/Pisa/stucco, agate/emerald, chromosome/transmute, and ginseng/South Korean. I don’t think there’s anything more to it. Perhaps it’s just the way a setter’s mind works when selecting entries to fill the grid with.

  1. George Clements

I’ll start with Picture 2 as a siege ENGINE.

  2. Robi

This is more difficult than the crossword!

#2 is a heavy war ENGINE – is that the connection?
    #3 are hummingbirds – there is a green-tailed EMERALD species (?)
#4 Tea tree oil, reputed to be effective against LICE
#5 – I think these are AMICABLE numbers written on apples (1184 and 1210)
#1 is, of course, a cockpit and #6 an underground (tube) shelter in London used during WW2 but I need lunch before I investigate other connections.
    Are 2-5 correct??

  3. Robi

GC, looks like we came to the same conclusion for #2…..

  4. scchua

    George and Robi:
2: Yes, a siege ENGINE, in particular, an onager.
3: There are several species of hummingbirds called EMERALDs, such as the blue-tailed emerald, etc.
    4 and 5: Right.
1 and 6: You’re on the right track.

  5. Robi

Well for #1, there is TO/GA: ‘A Takeoff/Go-around switch (TO/GA) is a switch on the autothrottle of modern large aircraft, with two modes, takeoff (TO) and go around (GA).’

  6. George Clements

The best I can offer for Picture 6 is that it shows WW11 Air Raid Wardens and the first book of Trollopes Barchester series is entitled ‘The Warden’ (brilliantly portrayed by Donald Pleasance in the television adaptation). Is that it?

  7. Robi

GC @6; seems plausible enough for me………

  8. scchua

George and Robi, that wraps it up. Well done!

  9. George Clements

Thanks for the challenge scchua and to Robi for getting all the difficult ones.
    Best wishes to you both.

  10. No pictures of old Americans – I didn’t stand a chance!

    Cheers…

  11. Robi

Hi George, well played for WARDEN.

Hi grandpuzzler – one for you here.

  12. Robi – I didn’t say Native Americans! However, if I had to guess, I would say that it is
Jumping Bull’s son Sitting. Fun Fact: Annie Oakley was his adopted daughter.

    Cheers…
