… (optional Friday evening and Sunday lunch, 1,2 or 3 nights).
Is this a good date? If so, please confirm below then Jane and I will go ahead and organise it. Half-term for the teachers, and it worked in Sheffield this time last year (some bloke’s birthday). We’ll try and get deals for Fri/Sat, Sat/Sun and Fri/Sat/Sun if all approved.
John H. (aka Nimrod, Enigmatist etc)
Grr – I’ve booked a walking holiday in Mallorca starting on that date. 🙁
Have fun!
Dates OK for me
A trip to York does sound quite tempting, and the date is fine by me
Can anyone join?
I’m currently free that w/e and definitely up for it.
#1 Oh, Eileen…Cancel it!!
#4 almw3 Of course! You’d be most welcome.
JH
I booked it only two weeks ago, John, having tossed up about it for ages – and I’m gutted! [I haven’t missed an S and B outside London before.]
Count me in John and I have permission for at least one overnight too.
[Have you found the Golden Ball yet? Worth including on any crawl.]
Thanks, I’m in then
I can make that, John. Will get train up for Saturday afternoon and get hotel for the night.
Looking forward to it.
Hope to be there with the flashlette, however there’s a possibility we’ll be in Australia… I know a few Camra folks in York too. 🙂
Sounds like fun, so it’s in my diary. Presume it will be a sophisticated lunch with erudite conversation rather than just a pub crawl?
And almw3, having organised several of these bashes in Derby, I can assure you that, as John says, you’ll be very welcome.
Wearing my Alan Connor hat for a mo, please could you submit clues for (a) sophisticated; (b) erudite. I’ll find a prize, to be awarded to both winners, at the do.
Must go and look up both words now.
And “lunch”.
J
I’ve always had you down as both (a) and (b), John, but perhaps you’ve been misleading me. Whatever, it’ll be another enjoyable get-together. Looking forward to it, and to seeing some new faces as well as old ones.
Just down the road from me, so will be there. I’ll try to rustle up the rest of the North Yorkshire setters’ brigade. There’s at least five of us!
I should be able to make it…I’m actually in Mallorca at this very moment!
Jago
Yes, I will be there too.
A great excuse to make it part of a long weekend with my best mate Peter who lives in Durham. I better should tell him now …
The date looks good to me, and I hope to be able to get there as I enjoyed the Sheffield get together so much.
Edit rude peculiar crossword clue? Clever if you get rid of Duck for a start! (7)
Dates fine with us! Thanks John.
Offered to Cerberus, his pet is bound to appear cool (13).
Clever? Perplexed? Cite crude clues if lacking capacity (7).
A good deal harder I think:

Hi Nimrod,
I hope to be there. Jut got to work out the travel logistics. And ask permission from the wife, the dog, the cat, the kids and my bank manager.
kenmac
Date’s free in my diary at the moment so hope to be there.
It’s the week after the Times finals.
#27 Yes laudanum, but that’s down south. Who on earth would want to go there?
Hmm was intending to do full weekend. Journey for two there £26 back £602. Ouch.
Had similar before and got better deals later so we will try to be there.
I’m driving from Warwick if that’s any good to any body. Hoping to do full weekend if poss. Or at least two nights.
Now, I saw that some clever brains already gave us clues for ‘sophisticated’ and ‘erudite’ at this place here.
Is that what we’ll have to do if we want to submit a clue?
Just like at the Guardian site, we can see the clues that were already sent in and then try to be different.
Or submit another one, and another one perhaps.
Is that how it works? Or should we send them to a special (your?) email address?
Just asking.
BTW, Flashling, I presume you mean “back 62 pounds”?
And if that is indeed so, 88 pounds for two returns is not really bad. I’ve had a lot worse. For example, return for one to Liverpool for over a hundred pounds.
In Holland (and many other European countries) you pay for the number of kilometres you travel. In my opinion, that is how it should be. Here in the UK it is a jungle. Going on a train is like boarding an airplane. A complete rip-off.
Having said all this, hope to see you again in York!
Would love to make one of these one day but the Lear jet’s on the blink again.
Look away now if easily offended.
SOPHISTICATED
It’s been ordered by the doc – a piss-up? Cool! (13)
Hello Sil @31.
Assuming that I haven’t jumped the gun by posting challenge clues here, and that one can have as many goes as one likes, here is another:
Clever but tired University entrant initially appears confused (7)
I just noticed this on nationalrail.co.uk:
It is not yet known how First TransPennine Express services will be affected by engineering work from Saturday 25 to Friday 31 October 2014. Please check back nearer the time of travel.
And another:
Argumentative type I despised at first – elementary error – proved to be worldly wise (13).
Re kenmac @34
Ooh, John… you’d better move it to the previous weekend. 😉
It is nice of nationalrail to give the warning, but changes due to planned engineering work are supposed to be reflected in the rail timetable 12 weeks in advance so they should be there for that weekend on all of the ticketing websites already. TransPennine disruption would most likely affect those travelling from the Manchester/Lancashire area (and possibly Scarborough and Teesside).
@36
Oops, no – can’t do that: it’s the Times finals.
@Sil no it’s what I said! Looking today it’s not quite that bad though.
Think I’m on for this but can’t check band diary from where I am, which is an Italian place where it’s very hot and sunny and fantastically marvelous and blah blah blah you’re all jealous blah blah. But internet is crap. Still – hot, sunny, marvelous etc.
Will know for certain in about a week.

Hi John,
The date is fine but York is a bit too far for me to do in one day. I may persuade ‘himself’ that it would be a good place to visit for a weekend in the campervan if there is a campsite nearby.
Hopefully you’ll let us know, via this thread, what times and arrangements there will be for the Saturday.
Update!
Thanks for your interest, everyone. It looks like we will go with that weekend (if you want to start investigating trains), but we are still searching for a combination of appropriate location(s)/accommodation. Bear with us for just a few more days…
Cheers,
John
Sadly can’t make it that day: pity it couldn’t be 18th.

Sorry to miss this one owing to another trip. Have fun!
Tempted. I studied at York and miss the place. And I’ve not yet shown my face at an S&B or actually even met any of the lovely 15^2 people…
Sorry, John, I’m away on bizz. What a chiz.
Hornbeam – really sorry you can’t make it. And I like your alliteration. (A chiz is a swiz or a swindle, as any fule kno).
By the way, if this (15^2) is the place to communicate I am a bit surprised to see the names of only a handful of setters.
Yes, John, you count for 3 ( 🙂 ) but still.
Yes please, I’d like to come. I need a dairy-free meal. Many thanks
Not sure why, but there seem to be 2 threads relating to Sat 25th, so I’ve registered interest on both threads.
