Independent 8707 / Dac

Dac, as usual, has provided us with a fair challenge for a Wednesday.   There were no really obscure words.   SÉMILLON (19 across) is not a wine I drink very often but I was aware of it.

When I came to write up the wordplay for the blog, it all seemed a lot more straightforward than it was when I was solving the puzzle.  Hindsight, of course, is 20/20 vision.  It was the NW corner that held me up for the greatest time whilst solving..  Once I got PITTSBURGH (1 across) it all became a bit easier.  Last one in was UNDONE (4 down)

There is rarely a theme in a Dac puzzle so I think it would be a coincidence where the PROSPERO bit of PROSPEROUS (14 down) crosses OTHELLO (28 across).  I can’t see any other characters from OTHELLO in the grid

Across

No.

  1. Semillon is the main white grape grown in the Hunter valley, NSW. And the grape responsible for the greatest French dessert wines (ch d’Yquem etc).

  2. The usual excellent fare from Dac, IMHO. I also found the NW the trickiest and it took me a while to get SEAWARD. That led me to PASTA which in turn gave me PITTSBURGH, and UNDONE was my LOI.

A masterly creation of perfect construction and elegant surfaces from Dac, matched exemplarily by Duncanshiell’s blog.
If I had to find just one ‘quiggle’ – would not “circulate” be more apt than “circulates” in 1ac?
Thanks again to the double Ds.

  4. Sil van den Hoek

    Good puzzle.
I think “circulates” is fine, it is what the word GRUB does.
In that clue I have more ‘problems’ with that little word ‘of’ which seems to be out of place. But perhaps not.

    Thanks Dac and Duncan.

Maybe I was just having a bad day but I struggled quite a bit, not seeing the wordplay plonked in front of me. Good job I wasn’t blogging. 19a I kept thinking of St Emilion or something like that.
    Thanks Duncan and Dac.

Just a detail: ‘liable’ is ‘likely’ (not ‘likely to give’), I think; so it’s ‘liable’ that’s going to give support to RE.
