Sloggers & Betters in Cambridge?

It has been suggested that the next S&B get-together outside London be held in Cambridge, rather than Derby, sometime during March/April next year. Please indicate in a comment below if you might be interested in attending a gathering at this location.

  1. Sounds good, especially as the Listener Dinner has been brought forward to the end of February.

    Count us in!

    John

  2. Yes, I would definitely be interested in that, though I can’t guarantee availability in April since there may be a Scottish walking trip to work round.

  3. This sounds attractive, not least because it would mean that I won’t have to organise another Derby S&B for twelve months. Count me in.

  4. I live in Cambridge, so what could be easier?

That said, I am a bit surprised by this announcement.
On one or two occasions I have indicated (informally!) that I would like to (co-)organise such an event next Spring, but I said this without having any concrete plans yet (although I talked to Andrew about possible locations, about a month ago in Grantchester). The announcement above is not initiated by me but, I think, it would be nice to join forces.

Meanwhile, all this leaves me with the not unreasonable question: who is the one behind the announcement above? Is it Flashling, perhaps?

  5. Quick pop in after settings up tonight’s show. Yes I asked Gaufrid to see what interest there might be for a new venue. Will need to try and find a suitable venue if anyone has any ideas – a college bar perhaps?

  6. Would love to come and meet everyone if the date is doable. Have two children at the University at the moment, so there’d be a choice of floors to sleep on!

  7. Well, Flashling, it’s clear what was already clear to me months ago: you, I or we should organise a S&B in Cambridge.
Let’s have some contact how to find a suitable venue [which is the trickiest bit, in my opinion]. I will email you within the next few days.

  8. Yes, I have (every now and then) contact with Rorschach.
He should indeed be involved too.
As should one or two others, like e.g. tupu.
Perhaps, Flashling, it is better to contact me and/or Andrew first before asking help and advice of readers of this site.
Unless, of course, you want to organise it all by yourself.
As I said before, I am happy to join forces.
I repeat: I will email you within the next few days.

  9. Kath and I would love to come but will only be able to make it if it takes place in the last couple of weeks in April.

  10. Jason: no invitation needed, you would be very welcome.

flashling: I’ve just replied to your email of last week, which I seem to have missed until now.

  11. This is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long while! All my favourite people in my favourite town?! Can’t wait. Do let me know if any help is needed in the planning.

    Excited.

  12. Provided I’m not otherwise engaged (and I’ll certainly keep the date free if known well enough in advance) I’ll be there.

Living beside the Birmingham-Stansted rail link makes it very easy for me.

  13. I’d love to be there, but it probably won’t be practical. When a date is fixed, I’ll see whether I can manage it.

  14. I (am back in the country and) live in Cambridge too. Didn’t realise there were so many of us! Perhaps we should have a regular meetup for the locals.

Anyway, I’ll come, and am happy to help organise (or to get out of the way and let someone else do it …)

  15. Dear All.

With so many positive responses, the Cambridge S&B will definitely take place.
We are currently in the process of finding a nice location.

We have a date in mind: Saturday 18 April 2015.

But it might change due to the availability of the chosen venue.
So please, see this as a provisional date.
We’re definitely aiming for April (and not March).

    Sil
    (+ Flashling, Andrew, Rorschach)

  16. Sil,

In that case I’ll have to give my apologies, since it clashes with the Scottish trip.

Hope it goes well & thanks…

  17. Well, if that really is going to be the date, still, please, count me in – I can’t bear to miss another one!

However, I do have a ticket for the Philharmonia Orchestra at De Montfort Hall, Leicester for that evening:

    Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor
    Eric Silberger violin

    SCRIABIN Rêverie
MOZART Violin Concerto No. 5, K219
    SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2

Tough choice – but I know where I’d really rather be – so the ticket’s going begging, if it comes to it … let me know.

  18. Eileen, as I said the date is provisional.
I thought it would be a good idea to give an indication.

18 April is our preferred date but it’s not set in stone.
But do not expect an earlier date, 25 April might be an alternative.

Meanwhile, we would like to thank Mr A Writinghawk @33 for some very useful suggestions. BTW, what a clever pseudonym!

  19. beery hiker, I really can’t be sure yet but also given Eileen’s dilemma (@37) we should indeed consider that.

  20. I will be there whatever the date assuming I have recovered sufficiently from a hip-replacement and the new hip hasn’t rejected me.

  21. No, it’s not a definite.

We still have five (!) months to go and the final date ultimately depends on what’s possible at the venue of our choice.
For example, one of our options can’t do April 25 (because of a birthday party) but can do almost any other date.

We’re still looking for a venue (including food) that’s both worth the journey taken by many and affordable.
Speaking as an individual, April 25 is the preferred date.
However, April 18 cannot be completely ruled out at the moment.
May 2 is also an option but not preferable as it is a Bank Holiday weekend then.

As soon as a decision’s been made, we will announce it here.
That’s all I can say at the moment.
