Beelzebub 1,289

A classic Beelzebub of about average difficulty, I found, though with some quite tricky parsings, and plenty of nice long anagrams to work through.

I’m a way behind with these due to a minor injury, so let’s catch up a bit while the Ibuprofen kicks in.

*=anag, []=dropped, <=reversed.

Across
1 AVGASG in AVAS[t]. Derived from aviation gasoline.
5 BAWCOCK – (WC + O) in BACK. Slightly tricky to parse perhaps, but the definition is “fine old fellow”, from Shakespeare, and the “round” gives you the O.
11 NOONTIDE – (ON + IT<) in NODE.
12 TARTARE SAUCE – TART + (AREAS CUE)*.
13 INDICA – INDICA[tor], I think. There’s nothing to unambiguously, er, indicate that we must remove three letters, but I see no obvious INDICA? candidates.
15 UNSOD – UNSO[un]D. If you think of “sodden” etc. for wet, UNSOD for dry is rather nice.
17 KIPPA – KIPP + A. Petrus Jacobus Kipp.
18 KINGDOMED – KIN + G + DO + MED.
21 RUTACEOUS – (U + COURTESA[n])*. Here, “rue” is a plant genus.
22 OGEED – GEE in [b]OD[y].
25 OTTER – [r]OTTER.
26 EARHARTH in (EAR + ART).
27 BITTER ORANGE – (TORTE BEARING)*.
28 DISORDER – IS in (RED + ROD)<.
29 TERRIER – two definitions: soldier/a historical word meaning a register of a landed estate.
30 REIFY – RE[ct]IFY.
Down
1 ANTICKE – (N + TICK) in ANE.
2 GORDON SETTER – (ENTER DOG SORT)*.
3 ANTIS – AN + SIT<.
4 STACK – two definitions: a Scottish word for “inserted”/a particular type of computer memory.
6 ADENOMATA – (A + TAM + ONE DA[y])<.
7 CYANIDE – (Y in CANID) + E.
8 ONUS PROBANDI – A in (PRISON BOUND)*.
9 COCOPLUM – COP in COLUM[n].
10 KHEDAK + HEAD*.
14 ANOTHERIE – I in (A + NOT HERE). Great word.
16 RING-TIME – MERITING*. A time for giving rings, apparently.
19 GREETER – GREE + TER[m].
20 ESOTERY – SOT in EERY.
22 OOBIT – 0 + 0 + BIT.
23 ERRORE + (0 in RRR). The three Rs, there.
24 SHARE – SH + ARE.

  1. I started this at a science fiction convention, and another keen solver gave me a hand (as he’d just finished Azed). We entered GOLDEN SETTER for 2dn and NOONTIME for 11ac, which delayed matters, but I did finish it when I got home. Couldn’t find a definition for 14dn, either in Chambers or on-line.

Sorry to hear about the injury.
