9/10 defeated me. Never heard of him, couldn’t work it out from the word play, and electronic word searches didn’t turn him up.
I had HOARSE for 25A – not as good an answer as COARSE but it seemed plausible at the time.
Enterprising puzzle for a Sunday. Liked the construction of MANIFESTO, PREHISTORIC, REPUGNANT.
