Azed 2235

Given that this puzzle was published on Easter Sunday I was expecting an Azed special, so I was slightly surprised to see just a plain Competition puzzle.

There was the usual mix of obscure words and Scottish words with a few words from everyday vocabulary in the grid.

Solving an Azed puzzle always generates some interesting research and usually leads to an increase in general knowledge.  The puzzle today followed that tradition.

I wonder if I was the only person who wondered about the US State of Oregon as the potential entry at 15 across.  There are a few mountains in Oregon.

Azed comes up with some very good surfaces.  I liked the one for MADAM at 28 across as well as the one for HIRER at 6 down.

  1. Thanks duncan. I couldn’t see the definition for COAL last week, simply seeing it underlined by you has made me kick myself. And I’ll admit to Oregon carelessly entered too, obviously wrong very quickly though.

  2. Thanks Duncan and Azed. I enjoyed this, and finished it on the day it was published, which is by no means always the case with Azed puzzles.

And I confess I also entered ‘Oregon’ before seeing my mistake.
