Sloggers & Betters – York, Oct 24 (23-5) 2015 – Update

***** Update: The route and timings for the quiz pub crawl on Friday evening will be the same as last year, this time to incorporate sandwiches, chips ‘n’ stuff at the Maltings. Details can be found here. *****

A message from John Henderson:

Many thanks for your responses to my “Show of Hands” post. Let’s make it a date, then!

Main event: Saturday October 24, The Fox and Roman from 1130am. ( www.vintageinn.co.uk/thefoxandromanyork )

The pub will supply a hot and cold buffet at around 3pm which will cost between £8 and £10 per person. If you could indicate below (i) whether you would like to be counted in on the buffet and, if so, (ii) whether you have any dietary needs, that would assist the caterers.

Subsidiary event: Beer and Quiz crawl: Friday October 23, meet from 6pm York Tap www.yorktap.com (north end of Platform 3 to save drinking time) with further beer and quiz rounds at four other pubs on the hour each hour until 10pm, venues to be published later. Last year there was a slight problem with people not having eaten. Shall I organise basket snacks at the second pub? Again, please let me know below.

Hair of the Hound: luckily (what? – ed.) the York Tap opens at 10am on Sunday, so if you fancy a pint before your train…

Weekend accommodation in York is pretty tricky if you don’t think about it in advance, so I’d strongly recommend advance booking. Walking distance from the Saturday venue are: Burswood Guest House, Bentham Lodge, Curzon Lodge and Stable Cottages, Holiday Inn and the Marriott Hotel. All of these are on Tadcaster Road and are approximately 20 minutes walk from the city walls (30 minutes from York Station), though the bus services are good and frequent (e.g. Numbers 4, 12, 13, 14). If anyone should need it, the pub has a large car park at the rear.

  1. John,

Thanks for that! Please count me in for the Saturday buffet (no dietary restrictions). Will try to make the Friday this time so the basket snacks sound lie a good idea.

  2. thanks john, we’ll be there for all of it, grub please for fri and sat but no special requirements

  3. Thanks, John. I’ll be there just for the Saturday event, so please count me in for the buffet.

    Peter

  4. Hi John.

Two for Saturday, please, with buffet, including one gluten-free (which the F&R staff provided admirably last year).

  5. I hope to be there for the buffet on the Saturday please & I’ve no special dietary requirements.

Thank you for organising it; look forward to it.

  6. Thanks for organising this John (and Jane). I’ll definitely be there but no food required on Saturday. If I can arrange reasonable accommodation, I’ll be there for the Friday “warm up session” too!

  7. Two for food on Friday and Saturday please John, no special requirements. Thanks for organising and very much looking forward to it,

    Claire

  8. I can’t (so won’t) be there on Friday.
    But Saturday’s Alright For F….. [ ood ].
    Like others no special requirements.

  9. Thanks, John. Veggie food on Friday and Saturday, please. It will make a pleasant change from cooking in the galley.

  10. Hi John. So looking forward to a return visit! I will be there on Fri and Sat so food for both events please! Thanks! (no special requirements)

  11. Hello John and Jane,
Please include Jennifer and me for the Saturday buffet. Looking forward to seeing people again.
Will need the pub car park as Jennifer’s waliking is still pretty awful, and we will have the Border Terrorist with us.
Best wishes to you both on your upcoming Anniversary.
    George

  12. I intend to be with you Friday and Saturday, and would request eats on both. Dietary requirements: yes, I definitely like food.

  13. I shall have to give this a miss, sadly (particularly since I missed out on Cambridge in April), but other commitments have intervened. Oh well, there’s always next time.

  14. I’ve hotels and train tickets booked and will be there for both the Friday and Saturday events – not worried about food for Friday, but please count me in for the Saturday buffet (no special requirements).

Thanks for organising this, looking forward to it muchly.

    Harry

  15. I’ll be there on both Friday and Saturday. Buffet on Saturday please John, no tripe or caviar but anything else will be fine. Will make my own arrangements of the Friday night food. Looking forward to seeing all.

  16. I’ve not tried it out, but maybe this is useful? http://bit.ly/bookyork

The Saturday do is at the south side of York, anything in the racecourse/Tadcaster Rd vicinity minimises walking. City Centre to venue on Shanks’ Pony is around 30 minutes, 40 from the Station.

    John

  17. Count me and my wife in please for at least Saturday. We’re not sure about Friday night yet. We haven’t been to one of these events before but are looking forward to it.

  18. Would be great to be there, but as normal for October half-term, we’ll be cold, wet and miserable somewhere in north-west Scotland. Oh, apologies, I’ve just been told by my wife that we’ll be “enjoying a relaxing week’s holiday near to Oban”. My mistake. Hopefully will be able to make the next meet.

  19. Sid and I will be there on the Friday and Saturday – please count us in for the Saturday buffet (2 x veggie).

  20. A belated ‘yes’ from me for both Friday and Saturday, and yes please to food on both days, no special dietary requirements

  21. I’ll be arriving Friday in time for the quiz crawl. Please put me down for some food on the Saturday (no special requirements).

  22. Hi John,

My daughters birthday party has been shifted a week, so I can now come to York. I’ll drive up for the day on Saturday, please include me in the Buffet Lunch

    thanks
    Richard Pauptit (dutch)

  23. (1) Hello John.

Next Saturday, two friends of mine will join me.
My best mate Peter and his girlfriend Karen.
Both of them would like to be to put down for lunch – no special requirements.

    (2) Hello Others.

If anyone brings a crossword to the York do and would like the puzzle to be blogged at Fifteensquared, please drop me a line.
    At dalibor1@virginmedia.com.
As I have taken up teaching again, next week will be very busy for me – so please asap.
I am, once more, happy to put the annotated solutions at this very place.

    Sil

  24. Ta J’n’J. Hope to be there early on Sat, with no special dietary requirements.
Looking forward to seeing friends old and new tackling Saturday’s Indie 😉

  25. Very sorry not to be able to make it – I will be stuck at work. Maybe I’ll nip out to the pub with a crossword at lunchtime in solidarity! Have a good time.

  26. Just thought I should give a quick vote of thanks to John and Jane for organising another very entertaining weekend.

    Hugh

  27. Many thanks to John and Jane for organising another very enjoyable event yesterday.
It was a pleasure to meet some folk for the first time, and to renew some previous acquaintances.
Thanks too to Phil and Mrs flashling for letting Jennifer and me join their quiz efforts, which saved us from registering virtually ‘nil points’.

  28. Beery Hiker@45: here here! And what a large turnout, including a few new faces. Excellent selection of food (nice one John) to accompany the great real ales.

    Thanks once again, J&J.

    Mark

  29. I’d just like to echo the comments @45-48. Huge thanks to John and Jane for organizing a wonderful weekend – great pubs, puzzles, food and quizzes!

    Jason

  30. Yes, I’m echoing thanks, too…It was a wonderfully organised weekend, J & J (and in such a beautiful city). It felt very special to be part of such a warm and welcoming crowd.
`Thanks` don’t cover it – you two should be running the country. xxx

  31. Yes, huge thanks to both John and Jane for organising the weekend and all the quizzes. Good food, good company & excellent quizzes. Looking forward to next year already.

    Many thanks, Claire & Andy

  32. A great weekend full of fun, catching up with familiar faces, meeting lots of lovely folks for the first time, and booze – lots of booze. Only wish I had’ve got round to saying hi to everyone.

Many thanks to John and Jane for time spent in putting together such a well-organized and super-fun do.

    Harry

P.S – Anyone know who stole my trainers?

  33. I’ve only just realised I haven’t added my thanks for a super day on Saturday. [Friday night sounds such fun, I may well be tempted next year!]

Many Happy Returns, John – hope you had a great day yesterday – and huge thanks to you both. xx
