  1. On first read I thought I was going to fail on this one – but got there with work and a lot of enjoyment. Thanks Alberich for some lovely involved cluing and a few new words I had to check up on.

Thanks to PeeDee also. Isn’t 1ac simply the C in ACTION “delayed” i.e. moved back or to the left, to make CATION.

  2. peterj – that’s what I think for 1ac too but I can’t explain how the words in the clue indicate that. Can you be more specific?

  3. Thanks, PeeDee. A very nice challenge indeed.

I was defeated by CATION, never having heard of such a thing.

I think the parsing, pace peterj, is the start of ACTION, i.e. A, moved back (delayed).

  4. Thanks PeeDee and Alberich.

I too thought for a while that I wouldn’t finish. And thought for a while that my paper copy would be ruined by the sweat dripping off the tip of my nose – standing on a crowded commuter train in this infernal weather.

Much to enjoy here. I thought that ‘cocksure’ was terrific.

But still needed your help in parsing blithe and soldier.

Thanks for that and keep it up!

  5. Thanks Alberich and PeeDee

A backlog puzzle which was finished much quicker than normal for this setter. Trademark variety of clues throughout and particularly liked 16a (with Radiohead key to the answer), 27a (with Callas as key to the answer) and 14d (with Spark used as a misdirection) – where the subject people of the surface were used cleverly.

Finished in the NE corner with STROPHE (a new word), GNEISS and SCATHING the last few in.
