As usual with me, slow start, then a steady solve, and then 2 at the end which took longer than they should- CAREWORN and MATCHSTICK I think.
Thanks Everyman and flashling.
Same as for AJK, but with THROWAWAY and MATCHSTICK the last in if I remember rightly. I did like WINNIE-THE-POOH and PAYMASTERS
A slow start and a slow finish for me too. There didn’t seem to many obvious clues to get me started. The last two were EPHESIANS (never ‘eard of ’em) and SPRING. I think I fathomed it last week but I can’t rememember now, in what sense does spring=stem ?.
Favourites : FATALIST, WINNIE-THE-POOH, DEPARTMENT, SENTIMENTALITY (very misleading) and what a great surface/anagram for EPHESIANS.
Thanks to Everyman and flashling.
Davy @3
Spring = stem. I would say in the sense of ‘to spring from’ = ‘to stem from’ I.E. to originate or arise from.
Thanks to Everyman & flashling.
After taking some time getting used to the new setter’s style I am now enjoying his crosswords – very different to the ‘easier’ versions (which I liked very much) but very well clued and makes you work more I think.
I’m liking this setter’s style too. Favourites this time include WINNIE-THE-POOH, PAYMASTERS, NEW ZEALANDERS, SENTIMENTALITY and IMAGO.
Thanks to Everyman and flashling.
Heading home after a weekend of drinking crosswords quizzes and other debauchery courtesy of nimrod. Perhaps you might come and join us next time. ?
Slow start also although we kiwis did get a leg up with NewZealanders. Finding some of clues quite vague (for my mind anyway) eg stupendous and sentimentality but “the only letters that fit” theory comes in handy. However, felt a sense of achievement upon completion so all good. Thanks.
Have tried several times to submit my comment, but it won’t accept that one – 1 = 0. So I have given up.
Something is wrong with the captcha. I have tried several times to submit my comments but have now given up. Surely one – 1 = 0
Once I realised 24 A wasn’t Outback (which parsed perfectly well) and there’s no such game as Pitchstick the rest was fine. Thought us = our team was a bit feeble in 13D but obviously 21A was a highlight, thank you Everyman! Especially with Jonah having just passed away at the riduculously early age of 40.
Thanks for the blogging and the invite Flashling, but a bit far to travel.
As long as four + 8 = 12 I should be fine.
I enjoyed the NZ Herald weekday cryptics, but I could not solve any of the clues in this one. It was a complete failure for me.
Here is one from Thursday I quite liked: Famous seaman who walked with a waddle? (5) Drake
Last ones in, imago (which we had only vaguely heard of) and sentimentalitg. Also had outback instead of outpost for a while. Wonder how mamy other Kiwis had that problem V those in UK.
I had a bit of a struggle this week with the North West corner. I also beggared up the North East by erroneously putting in Africa for 5a and Antarctica for 8d which didn’t help the anagram for poor old Winnie! So it was one of those days…. Really liked the huge nod in our direction in 21a. Thanks Everyman and Flashling.
Well, OK I suppose. But I’m not sure I entirely approve of stipulating that a letter (N or T for instance) symbolises a word (name (27a) or time (14a) for instance). I got those clues but by inference to the best explanation given other clues. Shouldn’t the setter refer to accepted representations?
I thought i wasnt going to get any and I even overthought the all blacks trying to find something to do with champions, thought the first word was the. Then penny dropped.
I dont actually see spring = stem is it supposed to mean fountain? what have I missed? I had written in sprung but I wasnt happy with that either.
Vanessa – see comment at 4.
Enjoyable – especially 21A! But apart from 2D the NW corner had me stumped
