Enigmatic Variations 1202 Representatives by Samson

Samson’s offering this week. Six clues with no definition, which the need replacing, wordplay with additional letters spelling out initials, a seventh member and a thematic adjustment. And a final grid with only single letters in each cell and the two adjusted entries are the only non-words in the final grid. As preambles go – it’s a complex one.

Some reasonably accessible clues this week – good for those making the step up to this more complex form of puzzle. Also some more obscure ones in there too.

It became obvious early on that some cells (initially at least) required two letters to be inserted into a single cell. All resided in the no definition clues. Also some cells needed to remain blank – again those that resided in the no definition clues. The cross-checking answer providing confirmation of both.

So what did the additional letters spell out

SP

THE CLARINET REPRESENTS THE CAT

THE WOLF HAS EATEN THE DUCK

Now my classical musical knowledge is not extensive but I am familiar with Peter and the Wolf and the use of certain instruments to represent the characters in the story. Written by a certain Sergei Prokofiev (SP).

Looking at the unclued entries there was FLUTE, STRINGS, HORNS, DRUMS, OBOE and BASSOON. Which when replaced by their corresponding characters become

FLUTE = BIRD

STRINGS = PETER

BASSOON = GRANDFATHER

HORNS = WOLF

OBOE = DUCK

DRUMS = HUNTERS

This restores the one character per cell to the crossword. And the final step to ensure only real words are present in the final grid is to put the DUCK inside the WOLF on the bottom row yielding WODU and CKLF and making the crossing down answers real words.

Many thanks for a fine crossword Samson and a fine piece of music, too, Mr Prokofiev.

    I vaguely remember a Listener on this theme a decade or so ago. I enjoyed this one a lot. I like Samson’s clues, and the fact that apart from the duck in the wolf, every entry in the final grid is a real word. Hopefully there will be more Samsons soon.
