An escalop is the shellfish also known as a scallop, and “scallop” (but not “escalop”) also stands for its shell or a shell shaped dish used for cooking and serving seafood. Thus “escalop” = “dish” only indirectly. On the other hand, if dish is mean to be course in a meal, it would have to be “escalope/scallop/a thin piece of meat fried with egg and breadcrumbs”, or “escalop/scallop/a shellfish”. But can the latter be considered a dish without an accompanying description of how it’s cooked?

(Please post comments on ONLY the picture quiz hereinbelow. To post comments on the crossword puzzle, please click here.)
Pic 1- LOBSTER red? Pic 5 Tom CREWS?
Pic 2- they are waltzing? There is a famous SKATERs waltz
Pic 4- they are eating jelly babies – some link with PETROLEUM jelly?
Shirl, you’re right with pic2 and pic4.
Pic 6- I assume is Bath – there are CULVERTS involved there
Thanks for the tip on the Everyman thread, Shirl. I’ll see what I can find!
The Great Bath at Bath is a HOT SPOT?
Pic #5 is Tom CRUISE; homophone (as in the clue) of CREWS?
(I misread you post @1, Shirl – you had already suggested CRUISE, I see)
Pic #1 sunburn like a LOBSTER?
Hi muffin and Shirl – thanks for the tip…
Welcome cookie and muffun
Pic 5: Tom, star of the SCREEN, is obviously in some sort of HOTSPOT. He also appears in Mission Impossible as an E SPY?
Sorry muffin not muffun!
I had HESITATION waltz, which seems equally valid.
Pic. 5 — it looks like Tom Cruise in Cocktail (or in any event, he’s been near a cocktail), the opposite of which is a drink STRAIGHT UP.
Pic. 1 — not enough sunSCREEN?
Pic. 3 — a number of heraldic lions/leopards, mostly rampant but at least one passant. Oblique reference to another heraldic device, the spur REVEL?
Or ESCALOP, another heraldic term for a scallop shell.
Hi Ian, also ESCALOP for Pic 3, a sign the bearer has been to the Holy Land?
Not that it matters, but wasn’t the scallop shell the sign of having done the pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostela?
Sorry, Ian, I am having trouble posting comments at the moment – I am told the server is at fault, Error 522…time is now 15.05 GMT…
Ptc 5, LATRINE from the Latin latrina meaning ‘to wash’, hence Bath?
That was meant to be Pic 6 for Bath, sorry
Pic 3, a LORD MAYOR usually has heraldry on his regalia etc. I believe…
Pic 5, a parasol is a SCREEN against the sun (time 16.33 GMT)
Hi all,
In summary, you’ve collectively got:
Pic2 SKATERs’ Waltz
Pic3 ESCALOP is the shell like symbol in heraldry to signify the bearer has been on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Pic4 PETROLEUM jelly is not quite what jelly beans are made from
Pic5 Tom Cruise acted as a barman, who, in addition to cocktails and mixed drinks, would also serve drinks STRAIGHT UP
Pic6 LATRINE is from the Latin “latrina” shortened from “lavatrina” for bath.
Pic 1- HERBAL TEA a treatment for sunburn? (not boiling hot, obviously!)
Shirl, you’re on the right track with treatment.
Pic 1 – surely not urine as a treatment (from LATRINEs)?
PETROLEUM jelly again?
pic 1) Miley Cyrus could have prevented that sunburn by using (more) sun SCREEN
Ian SW3, PETROLEUM jelly it is (the product with myriad uses).
Thanks scchua
Thanks scchua for the fun. By the way, I found that Ruhr is the German word for ‘dysentery’; it is often like that with German words, my piano made by Schimmel, which sounds like heaven, ‘Himmel’, actually means ‘mildew’.
