Beelzebub 1,352

I seemed to be quite well tuned in to Beelzebub’s wavelength this week, getting through this reasonably swiftly.

That said, I did slip up by entering AINO incorrectly at 26 down. I felt sure I’d heard of that, and UNIAT was unfamiliar. Never mind.

There’s just 2 down left needing a bit of explanation from readers, though the definition is clear.

*=anagram, []=dropped, <=reversed. Hover to expand abbreviations.

Across
1 LE CORBUSIER – (CE< in LOT) + BUSIER. Pseudonym of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, and a helpful start to the puzzle for an architecture nerd.
11 JONSONIANJ + ON + SON. As in Ben of that ilk, of course.
12 COTSWOLD LIONC + (OLD WOOL ISN’T)*.
13 AGEIST – A + (I in GEST).
15 GO-GOG in GOO.
16 LASSOS – SO in LASS.
17 OATMEAL – 0 + MEAT* + AL[l].
22 PYRROLEYR in PROLE.
23 DEALER – from LEADER, but with the L and D switched.
25 TAKI – TAKI[ng]. This guy.
27 YARPHA – PRAY< + HA.
28 INSUFFLATION – I + N + (A FONT IS FUL[l])*.
29 ON THE HOOF – two definitions. A “frog” can be “a V-shaped band of horn on the underside of a horse’s hoof”, and weirdly I think I’d heard of it. Probably from crosswords.
30 WATER OF LIFE – IF in (TO WELFARE)*.
Down
1 LOCAL OPTIONPOL< in LOCATION.
2 EXOGAMY – not sure here. Clue was Guardsman curtailed scandalous relationship outside core group.
3 CITESS – CITES + S[talkers].
4 OASIS – 0 + AS IS.
5 BOOT SALE – BOOTS + ALE.
6 UNLOOKED-FOR – (0 + OK) in FLOUNDER*.
7 IOLITE – IO LITE. “Io” is the expression of joy, so this is hte “lite” version.
8 ENIGMAG in (A MINE)<.
9 FANGN in FAG. The “for play” refers to this being a Shakespearean term.
10 INTOLERANCE – (ONE CLARINET)*.
14 GARDYLOO – (A + R) in GOODLY*. The “wee” in the clue is particularly nice, having the obvious lavatorial connotations, but also because this is a Scottish word.
18 ALEHOOF – A + (EH in FOOL<).
19 TRISHA – SH in TRIA[l].
20 ROQUETRO + QU[i]ET. A particular kind of stroke from croquet.
21 ALPINI – (IN + I + PLA)<.
24 ARTAL – [particul]AR TAL[ks].
26 AINU – UNIA[t]<.

Funny, I found it on the tougher side, finishing it quite late on Sunday. But I did know AINU. 🙂
