Azed 2289

This was a typical plain Azed crossword.  The clueing was precise and the vocabulary was a mix of modern and arcane.

I solved about half of this without reference to Chambers but as always I reverted to the big red book to complete the puzzle.  I wonder how many people solve Azed regularly without delving deep into the dictionary?

The clues ranged from the fairly simple (26 down for CLOG) to the deceptively simple (31 across for AEDES) onto the more complex (13 down for TERRAMARE)

As ever though the puzzle was a satisfying intellectual challenge.

  1. Thanks duncan. 18d is an odd beast. The parsing you have may well be what Azed intended but I can’t see that is actually what the clue says, unless you read delineated when scratching just the opening letter to give [D]RAWN then read scratching just the opening letter to give ESS which seems several steps too far for the precision I normally associate with the setter.

  2. A very similar experience to Duncan. About half solved fairly quickly and confidently, the rest a lot more slowly and with frequent reference to the BRB. These days I’ve got it loaded on my iPhone, which makes checking things a lot quicker, especially with some of the sub-entries. I can’t imagine there are many solvers who complete without having to check at least a few entries?

  3. I suspect Azed has to use the BRB to compile these, quite possibly other references too, I do not feel even slightly reluctant to use any aid.

  4. Re 18D and comment #1, I’d agree with the blogger – I think it’s scratching “just the opening” leaving RAWN with letter = ESS being separate.
