Final Call for 21st May Derby S&B

A message from Eileen and Peter (Kathryn’s Dad)

Our Derby S&B is only a few weeks away, on Saturday 21st May. It will be at The Brunswick Inn, which is a very short distance from Derby station. Come out of the station at the main exit, cross the road and bear right.  In a couple of hundred metres, you’ll find the pub on your left.

We’ve booked the upstairs room, so climb the stairs when you enter, but not before getting a drink at the bar downstairs. The pub, and the room, will be open from 1100.

Lunch, which will be a £10 buffet, will be available from half past one. Vegetarian stuff will be available.

For those that have already said they’ll be coming, no further action required (unless you’ve changed your mind). For those that were in the ‘maybe’ category, please let us know yes or no. For those who would still like to come, you will be very welcome, but please say so in the next few days. We have to pay in advance for the buffet, so will need to know numbers.

Our past four Derby gatherings have been great fun – a chance to meet crossword friends old and new, a chance (if you must) to solve some specially produced crosswords, and the beer’s not bad either.

If you are coming by car, the best option for parking is the station car park, which last time I looked was £7.50 for all-day Saturday parking.

Hope to see you on the 21st.

Eileen and Peter

  1. I was a ‘maybe’ but I’m now going to the S&B in London on 24 May and my ‘entertainment budget’ won’t stretch to two outings.

I promise I will make Derby one of this days/years.

  2. Really can’t remember if I said yes or maybe, but it is a definite yes, tickets booked. Thanks, andy

  3. Just to confirm that I’ll be there – have booked my train tickets. Look forward to seeing you in Derby on the 21st.

  4. “Can’t miss this one, it’s on my doorstep (well, about a 10 minute bus ride away)! See you there,” was my earlier reply. Take that as a definite yes.

  5. It has become more a less a tradition that crosswords written for an S&B event are blogged at Fifteensquared.
As I have only limited time to do this and also because it would be good to publish the solutions rather quickly, I would like to ask anyone who plans to compile a (perhaps, special) crossword to send it to me as soon as possible.
    This means:
    – a pdf of the puzzle, including the clues
    – the annotated solution
    Email: dalibor1@virginmedia.com

ps, puzzles submitted only on the day itself, I am happy to blog but will take perhaps more time.

  6. We shall be there. I say ‘we’ – chances are me dear ole mum will be in attendance, allowing me the luxury of a few glasses. Or bottles. No, glasses.

  7. Hello Peter & Eileen,

I’m hoping to make it but unfortunately won’t know whether I can until the morning. Even if I do, I wouldn’t want to participate in the buffet – so count me out as far as your numbers for that’s concerned.

  8. I live in Tenerife but i will be in England on the 23rd. I’d love to be there so please save me a seat

  9. Hi S & B Derby organisers

Just to let you know I will be attending the soirée on the 21st. First time I’ll have been to this do – but looking forward to meeting some old friends.

  10. Sadly I won’t be able to make it after all. I had so looked forward to seeing everybody again but I realised that the date didn’t work with family plans.

I know you will all have a super day. Can I plea for a return for a Derby meet in the autumn rather than one in York.

  11. Sorry to miss out on this gathering. I am on holiday in Cornwall. Hope all goes well on the day.

  12. I’m no longer able to make this. Please let me know if I owe anything for the food pre-order. Thanks

  13. Sorry to hear that, Lohengrin. Don’t worry about paying for the buffet. It all usually gets sorted out on the day. Maybe see you in York in the autumn at the get-together that John H has arranged.

    Peter

  14. Really sorry — despite having booked train tickets, I won’t be able to come now because of work commitments. Schedules have been a bit disrupted recently.

I will be in London on Tues 24th, and hope to make it along to the George at some point.

  15. Thanks to everyone for making me welcome at this my first crossword convention (for want of a better name). I’m sorry I wasn’t able to stay for the whole proceedings but it was good to talk to setters and solvers alike. Oh, and of course, the beer was good! As an aside, from now on I shall be renaming myself on this blog as Tenerife Miller, if no-one has any objection. I have just got back here and the sun is still shining, just like it was when I left. Once again, thank you everyone for an interesting event.
