  1. I’m not sure whether it is fair to clue IC with ‘leading’ but it couldn’t be anything else.
And I don’t think B is a correct abbreviation for ‘brother’ in (1d).
Apart from that a fine tribute by Gaff.
Highlights for me: 11ac, 13ac, 4d and the nicely concise 17d.

In row 13 we can see BLIND DATE, which Gaff surely put there deliberately.
Perhaps, there’s even more hidden but as I am not a Cilla adept, I hand over to others.

Thanks scchua for another exemplary blog.
And Gaff for a rewarding workout.

  2. Thanks Gaff and scchua

I parsed 18D slightly differently: BLIP (spot, as in an unexpected result in observations) and SIGH (light breathing). Both seem to work about as well, so I wonder which was intended.

scchua, please could you put a little less detail in the preamble. I spotted it when I was going to the graun blog, and so was immediately alerted to the nature of the puzzle.

    Many thanks

  3. Thank you Gaff and scchua.

I left England for Uganda early in the 1960s, the only swinging I did was crossing rivers holding on to lianes, so all this passed me by, Cilla Black, the Beatles… However, I enjoyed the solve with the help of Google, but ELTER Water was unknown to me.

The clues for NOT A PEEP, MASTOIDAL, CUTTER, E-MAIL, BYGONE and SLIP BY were great.

  4. Sil @ 3 – In the UK at least, BB is a common abbreviation for the TV show Big Brother, so I think B=brother is perfectly normal.

  5. PS, I also liked 15a, “Cutter sailing boat The Queen loses bow”, Peter Willmot’s other moniker is Cutter, and he and his wife have sailed around the world in their own boat.

  6. I am sorry, Meic, I do not agree.
If your reasoning were right, K would be fine for Kingdom (think UK) just like, for example, V for Vision (think TV) or P for Paris (think PSG)
[but maybe these are, in your eyes, all right too].

We had a discussion like this on several occasions but abbreviations should be standalone abbreviations in their own right – well, that’s how I look at it.
B for ‘brother’ is not supported by any of the dictionaries.
But I know what Gaff meant and I had no problem finding the solution.
Therefore, I do not want to make too much of a fuss.

  7. I suppose “surprise” in the clue for 24d is another Cilla reference (from the TV show “Surprise Surprise”).

    Thanks Sil and Gaff.

  8. Thanks scchua and Gaff.

Wow! That was tough for a Tuesday puzzle and it took ages to get into it properly – even when I’d got SHERIDAN SMITH.

Not being too familiar with the Lake District I didn’t know ELTER water so really appreciated your help in fully parsing that, and also thanks for explaining the IC in 12ac which left me befuddled.

I also spotted BLIND DATE in row 13 but can’t see any others.

I’m not a great fan of themed puzzles and I was never a big fan of Cilla, but I thoroughly enjoyed this all the same so thanks again Gaff.

  9. Thanks Gaff and scchua
Very clever puzzle that took 3 sittings to get out with more than the usual reference to online help. Can’t believe that I was still able to miss the theme notwithstanding the obvious linkages.
More general knowledge required than normal – ELTER Waters, the actress SHERIDAN Smith and Richard SHERIDAN.
Lots of interesting clues and I too failed on the parsing of the second part of PRISCILLA which was my last one in and was still wondering how it linked to 1across (sometimes one is blind to the obvious!)
