  1. Good standard for a Sunday puzzle – not unreasonably hard, but some thinking required. Most went in pretty quickly, but then I was held up by the last 5 or 6, including POINTLESS which I had to get from the wordplay as I didn’t know the TV show and GLAD EYE, a term I hadn’t come across before. I tried to make ALTERNATE into a triple def, but I think your parsing is correct. COMPETENT was indeed ‘sufficiently good’, and I liked the image of a soldier holding a PARASOL. Thanks for the link to the (new to me and v. funny) Stephen Fry clip.

Thank you to Poins and scchua

  2. Started this quite late (around 10 pm) but finished in under half an hour without help. Fortunately I knew both SOLE, from an early interest in meteorology, and GLAD EYE, an expression of my grandmother’s as in “who are you giving the glad eye to?”

Liked OSIER, and btw there’s another layer to the clue in that Poplar is a district in London’s East End.

    Thanks, Poins and scchua
