Many thanks to Daedalus for this morning’s puzzle
Went to this after struggling fo finish the Nimrod, so relatively stress-free. I share Pierre’s doubts about BE for SIT, and can’t help wondering what sort of boat the SS L COHEN would be (16d). Fairly slow I’d think.
Thanks, Pierre for parsing of 14a which I entered (LOI) as inevitable but not understood. Very elegant once explained! Can’t think of a phrase where “be” can be used for “sit” so agree about 8d. Enjoyable Sunday afternoon canter, so thanks, Daedalus.
might this work – Prospective jurors are randomly selected to sit/be in the jury box.

The best I can come up with for the be/sit convergence is ‘Parliament sits in Westminster’ / ‘Parliament is in Westminster’. Not perfect, but probably just close enough.
A pleasant enough solve for Sunday, but I needed the blog to parse 3, 9 and 14. As for be = sit another possibility – still rather feeble though – could be ‘take place’ as one meaning of ‘be’ (Chambers). The conference will take place/sit on… (Remembering the Congress of Vienna which “sat by day and danced by night”.)
Thanks, Daedalus and Pierre.
or- Mr Jones was selected to sit/be on the committee.
Thanks to Cookie for relocating my geographically inaccurate comment 🙂
Thanks all! For sit/be, I was thinking of the meaning ‘be located’: ‘Ely sits in the county of Cambridgeshire’. But I shan’t try to defend it too vigorously.
