  1. A very enjoyable challenge thank you to Mudd and Turbolegs. It will also cheer up those humbuggy grumpies who don’t like seasonal clues in their cryptics.

  2. Thanks Mudd and Turbolegs

I had 11 as SO (like that) in MAN (staff, verb). I don’t know MON as staff, where does it come from?

  3. Thanks Mudd and Turbolegs

    11ac: I agree with Simon S @3

30ac: I am not sure that Dave W’s suggestion of THIRDS really works. The clue strongly suggests that the answer is a singular noun.

  4. Thanks Mudd and Turbolegs

A little harder than usual from Mudd and probably why it has been scheduled for the Friday spot. It seemed to take a long time to break into the puzzle, but typical of this setter, once one had a toehold, the rest slowly unravelled at a satisfying pace.

Agree with the MA – SO – N parsing of 11a, even though I had originally parsed it, without conviction, the same as TL. Unusual for JH to have two such similar words crossing with 7d / 11a.

Finished in the NE corner with TENERIFE, TIFFIN and INTO (even though had seen this recently and was my last in there as well) the last few in.
