Independent 9,421 / Phi

Phi’s latest offering rounds off the working week and heralds the transition to the seasonal jumbos in various newspapers and magazines.

It is unlike me ever to spot a theme in a Phi puzzle, but my feeling is that there isn’t one to be found in today’s crossword – correct me if I’m wrong!

I actually found this towards the easy end of the Phi spectrum in terms of difficulty, and the grid was kind to the solver in offering so many initial letters. I faltered fleetingly in the NW quadrant, where I was sure that the Spanish city had to be Salamanca and never even thought of Santander, where incidentally I have spent several months of my life!

My favourite clues today are the & lit. at 3; and 20A, 21, 26 and 27, all of which for surface reading. Incidentally, I would be grateful if other solvers could confirm (or otherwise) that LD is actually a stand-alone abbreviation for Liberal Democrat, or whether we are dealing here with two separate abbreviations (L for Liberal and D for democrat) that Phi has decided to run together.

And finally, a merry Christmas to setters and fellow solvers alike – may we all find time for plenty of festive solving over the next week!

  1. LD intended as two abbreviations that just happen to work together.

You’re sure Santander didn’t stir anything in the thematic line?

  2. Since nobody else is posting, I can see, hidden here and there: Santa, sleigh, snow, sack, deck [the halls], Lord and, intentionally or not, the Lehrer-esque SPEND. Any more I haven’t spotted?

  3. 7D ADVENT
    1A CARD
    6A ASS
    3D ANGEL (well, nearly)
9D TAT (as well as PRESENT, which I assume Eccles was referring to)

Unfortunately I can’t find the least piece necessary for ABDOMENal SNOWman

    I’ll get mi coat…

    Thanks Phi and RR

  4. Very enjoyable. Also CARD (1ac).

Not sure how it would fit the theme, if at all, or even if it’s intentional but we also have “TENnis”, “asiNINE” and “slEIGHT”.

Thanks to both … Happy Christmas all …
